Democratic socialist candidate Melat Kiros shocked Colorado’s Democratic establishment when she defeated 15-term incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in the state's June primary. The double-digit win exposed a growing rift over the party's values that has left some Democrats stunned and questioning the future of the party.
"If you had told me this woman would have won by 13 points, I would have bet my house against that," Doug Friednash, a veteran political strategist in Colorado, told Fox News Digital. "I never would have thought we would have seen a victory of that magnitude here in Denver."
Friednash has tracked Colorado's political shift from red to deep blue over the past three decades, previously serving in the state legislature representing House District 10 in Denver. He later served as Denver city attorney and chief of staff to former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, and he currently works as a partner at Brownstein, a prominent legal and lobbying firm in the region.
Kiros' victory was one of dozens of wins for far-left candidates in Democratic primary elections this cycle as socialists continue to ascend across the country. The far-left's rise in the party has alarmed seasoned Democrats like Friednash.
"It was one thing watching this happen in New York ... But when it happens in a state like Colorado, which is really the gateway to the West, it tells me that this issue is going to spread and may be a cancer to the Democratic Party if they don't figure out what our values are," Friednash said.
He noted that Kiros' victory did not happen in a vacuum, pointing out that DSA-backed candidates have successfully captured seats in the state legislature and city councils over the past few years.

I’m sure he has been voting for (D) for years as he helped the party move further and further left. Why is he surprised? He acts as if Colorado has been a bastion of conservatism over the past decade.
It seems the problem isn’t just the DSA surge, but the fact that 30 years in Congress just wasn’t enough for degette. It was probably more a matter of people thinking it was time for this greedy geriatric fossil to retire and et some young blood in.
It’s the old saying: “Where there’s smoke, there’s...Colorado.”
The “normal” Democrat voters, including the party, were dozing. I don’t know about this district, but in other areas DSA has targeted safe Democrat districts with low voter turnout in the primaries, motivated their base, and got out the vote. They know how to play the game. Unfortunately, since this one is on her way to Congress, as the others probably are, the rest of us have to put up with the trash the “normal’ Democrats failed to dispose of.

For 65 years spineless republicans allowied democrat radicals to take over the education system and brainwash students with ultra leftist dogma.
Now the results are evident.
It could ultimately be the destruction of Free America and there is no simple remedy to change the dynamic.
And there are very few in government with the backbone to do anything about it.

To add to your excellent comments: the DSA know how to organize and understand how to appeal to younger voters.
Also, they know how to get their supporters to the polls.
As I recall, the voter turnout in most of these primaries is fairly low.
In 1972, with about a 5 to 10% of total enrollment, the Organization of Black Students, OBS, took control of the student government at the University of Chicago. It was easy for them-they were organized, they had their supporters vote and again most students did not turn out to vote.
I was elected that year as a graduate student. I stood outside the main lecture hall and asked students to vote for me. The voting booth was by the lecture hall-I “campaigned” for an hour and won by a landslide.
Basically the Denver/Boulder/Aspen triangle, and the Front Range to a lesser extent is Donkeyland. The plains and West of the Rockies are more conservative.

The moderate and leftist democRATs will be hoist on their own petard by the DSA. They will be the first against the wall in the purges that historically occur.
