Russia strike kills 21 as Ukraine says it needs more missile interceptors

Russia has attacked Ukraine with ballistic missiles and drones, killing at least 21 people, as Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said interceptors "could have saved lives".

Kyiv and the surrounding region experienced the deadliest strikes it had seen this year overnight, with 17 people reported dead. Attacks in Kharkiv and Donetsk also killed one and three people respectively.

Ukraine, who has consistently urged allies for more US-made Patriot missile interceptors to defend against Russian ballistics, has not reported intercepting any of the missiles in the overnight attack.

Zelensky added delays in receiving anti-ballistic systems from partners leads to "horrific casualties and destruction".

The president later said the supply of interceptors from allies had been "significantly reduced" this year.

Russia's defence ministry said it had struck logistics hubs and supply centres in Kyiv and the surrounding region.

"These centres were involved in the storage, delivery of various weapons and military supplies, as well as in the production and distribution of unmanned aerial vehicles," it said.

I do not believe the stories of our war-stock running low to be entirely false.

Between Ukraine, were we blasted off >600 of our missiles by the time Trump took office, 1,400 of our MANPADS (used also against drones); now Iran, but ALSO the fact that we cannot simply empty our war-stock for other theaters, I suspect the bottle neck is production of more and newer systems.

May the threat be Korea or China in the Pacific Rim (the other likely demand for such a system), we cannot simply move all our resources to the Middle East. We surely have a vast/huge number more, BUT these systems are reserved for certain threats.

I do NOT suspect it's a lack of money, Ukraine has the money through the EU/NATO and we're willing to sell these, it's a lack of war-stock and production capacity most likely.

Many EU nations have also already provided Ukraine Patriots in the past, and they are likely not wanting to hand over what they see as essential to meet their own security contingencies, just like us. That leaves Ukraine starved.

No different than Russia, we're trying to execute wars on the cheap and balance "guns with butter," so we poured resources into our defense industry when this war in Ukraine started, but did we really push hard enough?

You see us trying to expand production all over the place, another indicator, in Germany (ATACMS), Ukraine (Patriot), but this will take in some cases potentially years top come on line, it's no solution to today's problem.

Logistics and supply centers, aka: places where people live and places where they shop.

Russia is again, like they did before the invasion, justifying their evil and deadly actions.

And, how do they know what was in those locations? Again, just more justification for the deadly strikes, which are just about killing civilians who are not military targets.

All of what Russia does is commit more war crimes with each new action they take inside Ukraine. The initial war crime was the invasion, and it's just gotten bigger with time.

It's not as simple as 'get to it' for building any weapons, especially the super-complicated anti-missile missiles. Patriots are not so simple things like drones.

But, Ukraine may actually be on the way to producing their on Patriot alternative in the form of the FP-7x.

Those will probably see activation against Russian missiles before Ukraine sees it's first Ukraine produced Patriot, and they may not even need the Patriot. Other NATO countries are on-board for the FP-7 missile.

I'm pretty sure the U.S. can ramp up production to more than double, perhaps triple or quadruple the number of Patriots. Just too much red-tape involved and defense dollars going to other projects that may be obsolete by the time they get deployed. Example: manned fighter jets. Smart drones and smart missiles can take over those duties.

I suspect the pay must be pretty good. You can tell by the dwindling number of zealous zeepers on here (thank goodness!) that the defunding of USAID stopped a lot of that. There are still probably a couple of slimy NGOs willing to dole out some bucks to troll and push propaganda, though.
