McCarthyism has returned to the United States – and this time it’s even more dangerous

Trump’s campaign of repression echoes the red scare. But now the government has bigger ambitions and more powerful tools

There are many parallels between the first McCarthy era, roughly 1946 to 1956, and Trump’s campaign of political repression, his own updated McCarthyism.

Both regimes crafted a monster of quasi-facts and innuendo and fed it with fear: an enemy within, well-organized and financed, secretive and violent, allied with evil foreigners and bent on overthrowing capitalism, democracy and Christian morality. Both used flagrantly unconstitutional means to cleanse the nation of the spectral menace.

Each time, federal employees were targeted first. President Harry S Truman’s Federal Loyalty Program screened 5 million workers for communist affiliation; 2,700 lost their jobs, 12,000 resigned. Schools, unions and Hollywood fell in line; blacklists outlasted their makers. The Trump administration purged the federal agencies of his equivalent of the cold war communist, the “woke”. Applicants for civil service jobs were asked to identify their favorite administration policies and explain how they would advance them if hired. The federal employees’ union correctly called this request a “loyalty question”.

Then as now, law firms quailed, media companies capitulated, universities collaborated. Artists and performers – Zero Mostel, Jimmy Kimmel – were exiled from film and television. In the 1940s and 50s, the attorney general compiled lists of supposedly subversive organizations, which, along with communists and socialists, included groups from the National Negro League to the Nature Friends of America. Trump’s justice department is investigating progressive non-profits, including ActBlue, a chief funding source for Democratic candidates, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the Open Society Foundations, funded by George Soros, best known for supporting democracy movements in the former Soviet Union.

Describes the DSA perfectly: an enemy within, well-organized and financed, secretive and violent, allied with evil foreigners and bent on overthrowing capitalism, democracy and Christian morality.

If it had been more dangerous the first time around, maybe we wouldn't be dealing with all these %#^^#@@@! Communists now!

The Marxist Guardian lives up to its sordid reputation.

Well, he was misguided while he was going after the Army, communists everywhere were getting away with it. And his alcoholism interfered with his mission.

Joseph McCarthy is the Godfather of Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. He father Robert Kennedy, the future Attorney General, was McCarthy's top protégé.

You think the media should go after anyone who is suspected of being conservative?

Awwww, the poor little commies at the Guardian are angry that people hate commies.

We all know the deal, anyway. The commies whined and complained about “blacklists” in Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s. Now, you barely get a movie made unless it has race-swapping and all kinds of butt-piracy in it, along with overt anti-American messaging.

The modern Leftist blacklist is more complete and stringent than anything the commies accused McCarthyites of attempting in the 1950s.

Most of them probably just stupid kids that will grow up.

It’s the people behind them trying to destroy our country that need to be dealt with, harshly. They have stood up and announced themselves as enemies and should be dealt with as such.

Author looks about right - short hair, thick-rimmed glasses. Scowl on her face. She probably wakes up screaming from nightmares about Trump.

What a loon. This chick is just retarded.

Communist infiltration was a clear and present danger then, and the US government unfortunately had many secret agents. The Reds should have been scared. Harry White, head of the IMF. JM Keynes, economist was a kiddie diddler. Alger Hiss, wrote the constitution or founding documents for the UN. Henry Wallace, VP for FDR, was a Soviet agent. Most scholars believe Harry Hopkins was also on the payroll.

Subsequent events prove the State Department was not only complicit but engineered the loss of China, and ignored pleas for help in Czechoslovakia and Hungary, abandoned millions behind the “iron curtain”, and allowed for the invasion of Korea, if only indirectly. The Soviets acquired nuclear bombs in 1949 due to subterfuge and espionage (Rosenburgs, et al); they would have acquired them eventually though not for a few more years at best. By 1950 the Korean war began. That’s why.

“Blacklisted by History” is an extraordinarily well documented and footnoted book and should be required reading. They still use the same playbook today, the reader will immediately be struck by the parallels with our own time.
