An instructor for the University of Maryland's (UMD) School of Pharmacy was detained by immigration officials last month at Dallas Fort Worth airport, according to the university and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
A statement by UMD said that on July 21, Dr. Berhanu Kibret was arrested at the airport after attending a job-related conference in the city. "He was returning from a meeting of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, where he received a Teacher of the Year award."
"Dr. Kibret has a valid Work Authorization, so it is our hope that any issues surrounding his status will be quickly resolved and that he will be permitted to continue his work at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy," the UMD statement said.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed Kibret's arrest in a statement to CBS Baltimore, and said he is in the country illegally.
"On July 21, 2026, ICE arrested Berhanu Geresu Kibret, an illegal alien from Ethiopia. Geresu Kibret entered the country on June 21, 2021, on a visa set to expire on May 31, 2024. Against our nation's laws, he overstayed his visa and failed to depart. He will remain in ICE custody pending his immigration proceedings."
"Being in detention is a choice," the DHS added. "We encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $2,600 and a free flight to self-deport now."
The university said it was "greatly troubled" by the School of Pharmacy instructor's arrest.

How do you get a valid work authorization on an expired visa? Or a WA that doesn’t expire when your visa does?
Sounds like a lot of other things in life.
Yes, “doctor”.
I wonder who he pissed off. He was almost certainly targeted.
A friend of mine is a German lady who returns to Germany regularly so as to keep her visa valid. It costs her a lot of money to do it, but she never forgets.
Apparently others can’t be bothered to do so.
is there any such thing as a straight white male teacher?
I wonder if in December he knows it’s Christmas time at all.
“An instructor for the University of Maryland’s (UMD) School of Pharmacy...”
Sounds like a nice job for an American.
Agreed.
“He will remain in ICE custody pending his immigration proceedings.”
I approve of this whole heartedly!
“Being in detention is a choice,” the DHS added. “We encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $2,600 and a free flight to self-deport now.”
Since he’s a pharmacist, they drug him to the detention center.
Some Ethiopians aren’t selassie enough.
If something is important to a person they will find the time to do it. Obviously, this was not important to the doctor.
Could be a case of deliberate overzealous enforcement by a government employee trying to clog the courts with something no more like a paperwork snafu or his misunderstanding the value of a work authorization vs a visa.
Or, he wasn’t targeted but is part of some effort by the same folks who made a big stink about the deportation of the Maryland MS13 father.
But, probably a misunderstanding. Professors aren’t always that bright- I used to have an engineering prof who couldn’t be bothered to match his shoes. I had another friend who is a brilliant chemist who constantly *forgets* to shut cabinets, drawers, doors because in his head, he deems these actions an inefficient waste of time. I can see some college prof thinking that compliance with the rules is inefficient when he already has a valid work authorization.
Wonder if he actually has all the degrees he says he has. There were a couple of superintendents of major school systems that were not only illegal. They were also frauds too.
Looks like Maryland can’t catch a break. First it’s the ‘Father of the Year’ and now it’s the ‘Teacher of the Year’. Maybe the teacher can get the father’s lawyers.
My children’s Catholic school had a few and they were really good teachers.
I Haile question your sense of humor…
Not past high school. And that’s just retired engineers/military and coaches.
I tutored a string of NMSU kids I knew in calculus and was begged by the local branch to be the real professor. I would do it for free. The powers that be made it clear that a white male would not be welcome. They got stuck with a Pakistani who didn’t understand the subject and didn’t teach.
I literally taught the class anyway to a select 12 in my garage. They all got As.
