Man accused of arson in the biggest of 3 major fires in Spokane, Washington
NBC News ^ | Aug 3, 2026

A 37-year-old Spokane, Washington, resident with a previous manslaughter conviction was arrested Monday in connection with largest of the region’s three wildfires, which have displaced thousands and destroyed hundreds of structures, authorities said.

Aaron Farinacci, 37, was taken into custody without incident with the help of a SWAT team after a judge signed a warrant based on an allegation of first-degree arson, Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels said at an evening news conference.

Farinacci was being held on $1 million bond, he said. It was unclear if he has been formally charged or has a lawyer, and the public defender’s office for Spokane County did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday night.

Farinacci’s arrest came after police said a witness reported seeing a man near the Old Trails Fire shortly before it started around 10 a.m. Saturday, Nowels said. The witness told police the man was looking into the trees and was later seen crouching at the side of a road near some grass, before he “stood up and looked very nervous” and walked away, the sheriff said.

Deputies detained Farinacci about half a mile from where the fire started that same day and questioned him, but he was ultimately released, Nowels said. He had waterproof matches and a butane lighter, which could have been used to spark the fires, the sheriff said.

On Sunday, major crimes detectives were able to link the suspect to the fire “and determined that the origin of the fire was indeed exactly where the witnesses had seen Mr. Farinacci kneeling in the grass,” Nowels said.

Farinacci was known to walk in the area before and had been questioned about “arson-related behavior” in the past, though he was never arrested or convicted for that, Spokane County Prosecuting Attorney Preston McCollam said.

Farinacci has a criminal record in Arizona, McCollam said, including a conviction for manslaughter. Public records indicate he was convicted of manslaughter in 2012 for a killing that happened in 2010 in Maricopa County.

At 3,619 acres, the Old Trails Fire is the largest of three major blazes burning in the Spokane region.

The fires have taken out an estimated 700 structures and caused the evacuation of 67,000 people in the Spokane area, federal incident commander Tom Clemo said Monday. They have collectively burned through more than 8,000 acres and were 0% contained Monday night.

Nowels said there is no evidence connecting Farinacci to the other two major blazes in the region. He is scheduled to appear in court …

Arson is probably the most heinous of crimes. Arsonists should be shot on sight.

It's heartbreaking to see all those hundreds of homes destroyed and residents displaced. What ever happened to that firebug who started the Pallisades fire? Arson on this scale must be classified as a capital act of terrorism. The perp must forfeit his life.

Resembles the PCH, Malibu, LA fires. Separate yet connected. As a part time conspiracy common sense nut. I’d dig for a network in Spokane. I’d roast Fernancicee’s nuts over low flame till he sings hi soprano. Just saying.

And 14 people are missing! (As of earlier today)

Probably a billion dollar loss from the three fires around Spokane.

Unless ya’ll get more rain than we here in Idaho, keep your eyes peeled in Cle Elum. I’m sitting here in SE Idaho waiting for the crap to hit the fan in Island Park & Yellowstone. Be Safe.

Burn him at the stake...
Use a slowly growing fire...
Record his screams, then play them on TV and radio and near all mosques as a warning to all the firestarters...

I read the fire originally started the site of a planned Data Center. Anyone know if this is true? And if true whose data center was planned for there?

Jeanny Pirro to drop the charges, and proclaim Trump started the fire when his motorcade last drove through the woods.

Fair trial first.

If convicted burn him at the stake.

We were just visiting the Cascades for a few days. We got lucky and had perfectly clear air! Home is North Idaho above CdA.

The years of drought and very low snowpack are taking a toll. Winds tapered off, but getting hot again this week.

The arsonist will probably be declared mentally incompetent and only get a slap on the wrist. 🤬

The only punishment that might come a very distant close to all the misery an arsonist causes is to burn him at the stake.

Arson is a crime against humanity including and worse than death.
