Madison mayor calls for encampment to shut down (Madison, WI Still Under Siege)

MADISON, Wis. — Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway is calling for the encampment at Williamson and Baldwin streets to be dismantled, just one day after speaking to News 3 Now on how the city’s response could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The encampment was established late last week after the police shooting death of Corey Ruiz. Police allege Ruiz was "checking parked vehicles" on July 22 before encountering law enforcement. They said he used a knife and injured an officer before police shot him.

The City of Madison has provided resources to help keep the protest area safe, including salt trucks parked in front of makeshift barricades. Rhodes-Conway told News 3 Now in an exclusive interview that the trucks were intended to prevent vehicles from crashing through the barricades and injuring people.

“Normally when we would have a protest, or something like this, we would have [police] squad cars down to make sure people were staying safe,” Rhodes-Conway said. “Given the sensitivity of this moment, we’ve chosen to use other city staff and vehicles to do that.”

The city is also racking up a massive bill, mostly on overtime and staffing costs, that could have impacts further down the line.

“I would expect just roughly that we are talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Rhodes-Conway said.

She did not provide an exact figure Friday, saying the total would depend on how long the encampment remains in place.

Rhodes-Conway has said the encampment is neither sustainable nor safe and is negatively impacting the Marquette neighborhood.

In a statement Saturday evening, Rhodes-Conway said the following:

"The barricades must come down; people need to be able to access their homes and jobs so they don't lose them; and businesses need to be able to open.

The barricades need to be deconstructed. The vehicles obstructing the right-of-way need to be moved. The vigil site and other memorial items need to be preserved and/or situated in a manner that allows for a newly thought-out traffic pattern. The tents need to come down."

At a press conference after the shooting, Rhodes-Conway said she would propose funding for police body cameras in the city’s 2027 budget.

Same stuff, different day for Her Honor. What's the over/under on when the 'encampment' will be gone? We've still got a lot of warm weather ahead of us before the snow flies. I'll take November 21, 2026, barring any actual ACTION by the police, or the Mayor or some old guy with a push broom before then. ;)

First thing I’d do is remove the city-owned salt trucks. Then let the chips fall where they may.

But I guess there would be some pretty hefty lawsuits if any of the paid protestors got hurt...

There are way too many people being elected to some office that lack common sense

For those not aware, the mayor is a lesbian. That and with a hyphenated last name (a first for me) tells me her decision making skills are less than desirable to say the least.

what’s this “calling on” BS? ...doesn’t this pearl-clutching Mayor have the ability to ORDER the Madison police and fire department to hose these miscreants off the public streets?

So what you are saying is that the police don't have effective control over the city. Either that or you are preventing police from having effective control over the city. Welcome to Beirut, Wisconsin.

Move the encampment to right in front of Her Honor’s home.

That isn’t “normal” you stupid bint. You cannot have a mob setup roadblocks on public roads and then try to talk about safety In the same breath. Dereliction of duty in your sworn capacity as mayor.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway

Well, I agree with her statement, but I know nothing about her, or the situation other that the following from AI. Sounds like the shooting was justified to me, from the little that I do know, which tends to suggest that he attacked the police first, and they fired at him in self-defense.

The encampment is the Corey Ruiz Autonomous Zone Encampment (CRAZE), a protest and memorial site established at the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin streets in Madison following the police shooting death of Corey Ruiz on July 22, 2026.

Purpose: The site serves as a hub for mourning Ruiz, who was shot by Madison Police Department officers after a struggle in which he allegedly injured an officer with a knife, and for demanding police accountability, including body cameras and officer charges.

Conditions and Impact: The encampment has grown into a full-fledged occupation with makeshift barricades, tents, and food preparation areas, leading Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway to declare it "not sustainable or safe" due to public health risks, blocked fire/EMS response, and significant disruptions to local residents and businesses.

Current Status: The site remains active as of late July 2026, with the city incurring substantial costs for security and services while city leaders and community organizers attempt to balance protester demands with neighborhood safety concerns.
