Spain claims most illegal migrants in Ceuta have returned to Morocco

Most migrants who entered Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta illegally from Morocco have now returned, according to the Spanish authorities.

The return flow underlined the chaos that gripped Ceuta, with many migrants crossing back over the border on Friday to re-enter Morocco. “There are too many people here, everything is full,” one migrant told AFP.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said “almost all those who entered Ceuta have already returned to Morocco”.

The migrants came from the Moroccan town of Fnideq, next to the Spanish enclave, arriving throughout the night by land and sea. Some crossed the high barbed-wire fences marking the border, while others went around them by sea.

Eighteen people drowned during the crossings, according to a police source.

In Madrid, several hundred anti-migrant demonstrators, many dressed in black, gathered outside the Moroccan embassy on Friday evening to denounce what they called a migrant “invasion” in Ceuta.

Some chanted slogans including “Spain is Christian, not Muslim”, while others held a large banner reading “Remigration” — a term used by many far-right groups in Europe to advocate sending immigrants back to their countries of origin.

🚨

Into the mix, and preceding this, comes the idiotic House bill, H.R. 8595 which passed 217-209 on July 15, 2026, with 215 Republicans voting yes on it.

H.R. 8595 does not affirm that Ceuta and Melilla belong to Spain. In fact, the official text accompanying the legislation does the exact opposite.

The bill’s accompanying House Appropriations Committee Report (H. Rept. 119-631) explicitly states that Ceuta and Melilla are located in Moroccan territory.

While Sanchez being a Socialist certainly leaves much to be desired, Republicans voting 217-209 on H.R. 8595 undermines Cueta and Melilla remaining a part of Spain, the people of these areas strongly desire to remain a part of Spain, as shown by local election outcomes, public polling, etc. Populations in both areas, which include a mix of Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and Hindu communities, overwhelmingly identify as Spanish, and they don’t agree with H.R. 8595.

While Sanchez allowing 1 million “migrants” to stay in Spain leaves much to be desired, he has implemented steps to curb illegal immigration, which should be applauded. And while he certainly could do more to halt illegal immigration, the House vote on H.R. 8595 seriously undermines Sanchez, Spain (and the political right in Spain as well) saying no to Moroccans pouring into Cuelta and Melilla.

🚨🚨

Now enters Google AI:

“On page 88 of the technical budget report, the House Appropriations Committee inserted an unprecedented framing of the region’s geography: “The Committee observes that the Spanish-administered cities of Ceuta and Melilla are located in Moroccan territory and remain the subject of Morocco’s long-standing claim. The Committee supports efforts by the Secretary of State to encourage diplomatic engagement between Morocco and Spain on the future status of Ceuta and Melilla.

Key Takeaways of the Language” “Spanish-Administered,” Not Spanish Sovereign: By defining the cities as “Spanish-administered” rather than “Spanish territory,” the report implicitly validates Morocco’s long-standing sovereignty claims. It explicitly puts down in writing that the land the enclaves sit on belongs geographically to Morocco.

Encourages Negotiation: It pushes the U.S. State Department to pressure Spain into entering diplomatic negotiations with Morocco over changing the “future status” of the cities.” (Google).

With all of that said, in early 2026, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s socialist-led government launched a massive regularization scheme allowing undocumented migrants already in the country to apply for work and residency permits. By the June 30 deadline, over 1 million migrants applied. Critics argue this broadcasted a message to Africa that Spain is “open”.

Spain defended this as an “act of justice” designed solely for migrants already living in Spain before 1/1/2026, to address critical domestic labor shortages and an aging population.

Sánchez publicly condemned the illegal crossing into Ceuta and Melilla, calling it “an attack and a violation of Spain’s territorial integrity”.

His administration has funneled millions of euros to have the Spanish Civil Guard actively patrol and stop migrant boats before they can ever reach Spanish waters.

After a court ruling restricted the immediate return of illegals who entered Spain by swimming, Sánchez announced the government would immediately build “physical maritime containment measures” to legally block and return illegal sea crossers.

In the past, at the Columbia University World Leaders Forum, he stated that his welcoming stance on integration “should not be confused with naïveté nor with temerity” and emphasized Spain will fight immigration into Spain.

Then there’s the video on X showing at least 2 trucks filled with Moroccans piling out purportedly near the border of one of the Spanish areas, with one of the drivers getting out, opening the back and letting them out, with him wearing what appears to be an official unifirm of some sort.

Idiotic is right. But only because it’s none of our business in the first place.

How arrogant our Congress must be, to issue pronouncements on who should own Ceuta and Melilla.

I’d like to say more, but I’m awaiting Luxembourg’s opinion on who should own Alaska.
