Trump Was Right. Six Months Post-Maduro, Venezuelan Recovery Defies Critics
Newsweek ^ | 07/29/2026 | Jesu Mesa & Leonardo Feldman

When President Donald Trump ordered an early morning raid to arrest Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January and brought him to the United States to face trial on narco-terrorism charges, the warnings came fast. House Armed Services Committee ranking Democratic member Adam Smith cautioned that United States military intervention always “ends badly,” citing Iraq and Libya as examples.

Representative Jim Himes, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, drew the parallel directly. “This is exactly the euphoria we felt in 2002 when our military took down the Taliban in Afghanistan,” Himes said, “in 2003 when our military took out Saddam Hussein, and in 2011 when we helped remove Muammar Qaddafi from power in Libya.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the architect of the administration’s Western Hemisphere strategy, was dismissive. “The whole foreign policy apparatus thinks everything is Libya, everything is Iraq, everything is Afghanistan,” he said. “This is not the Middle East, and our mission here is very different.”

Six months later, the chaos never came.

Two different continents, cultures and peoples

The US understands Latin America and we share culture and history. Without arguing right or wrong, the USA often has success intervening in Latin America.

Not so with Muslims.

Have they released political prisoners? Have they thrown out the axis of evil countries? Have they allowed a free press and free political campaigning?

We have never tried what Trump is doing. It is not like normal wars of conquering land. This is an economic war.

We aren't ‘intervening’ in Iran. We are there to stop a threat to the region and eventually the world. The pseudo-theocracy of Iran is by nature expansionist, and in that manner they are part of a much larger number of Islamists who have been encouraged to infiltrate and essentially conquer the West. They do not want to ‘live and let live’.

It's not a choice. Nation building is a political choice. Stopping an ideology that wants to supplant your culture and make you follow there's - or die, is not a choice. It's an absolute necessity.

My first thought also - Venezuela is not populated with 6-th century double-digit IQ savages.

Agreed... but the Muslim issue is a religious quarrel - so to speak.
With them it’s inherent in their upbringing, their community, their daily lives.

Think of your response to Muslims saying you must ignore your religious upbringings and follow Allah.

Hard to change anyone’s deep beliefs.

Have they released political prisoners?

Yes, over 600. They passed a new amnesty law, that allows new grounds and procedures to petition for release.

Have they thrown out the axis of evil countries?

There has been a large redeployment of Cuban security and medical personnel, back to Cuba.

Have they allowed a free press and free political campaigning?

I have not heard, one way or the other.

Iran’s average IQ is 106.3, ranking it fourth globally according to recent studies. This high score is attributed to factors such as a strong education system and improved healthcare

Ahh yes..Cuba isn’t getting free oil anymore nor is China getting discounted oil. Don’t forget Venezuela elected Hugo Chavez. We learned a lot of watching Egypt....they had an election after Mubarak and the Muslim Brotherhood won. Thankfully the military took over. Sometimes in these countries the population is not capable of handing “Democracy”. We will see if and when Venezuela is. Previous experience says maybe they aren’t. At the end of the day having a friendly to America leader is most important.

#2: "Two different continents, cultures and peoples"

Exactly. Venezuela was founded and populated by humans strongly influenced by Western Values.

Iran is populated by pigs, swine, and Mohammedans, who worship the Moon God.
