A Russian missile crashed in Poland on Thursday during an overnight assault on neighboring Ukraine, NATO said, an event that could risk bringing Russia closer to direct confrontation with the Western military alliance, to which Poland belongs.
Mark Rutte, the NATO secretary general, said the incident was a “violation of Poland’s airspace by a Russian missile” and vowed to strengthen alliance defenses.
The missile — which the Polish authorities originally called an “unidentified object” — struck a field in southeastern Poland, causing no injuries. On Thursday morning, Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland told an emergency meeting that the missile was likely Russian, that it was carrying explosives and that it caused a 32-foot diameter crater, indicating “that this was a very serious matter.”
But he stopped short of directly blaming Russia for launching it.

So a tit for tat response would be to send a missile into Kaliningrad and hit something of military value.
I’m supposed to believe that the Russians were aiming at Ukraine but missed the entire country?
My gut feel is more along the lines of that being a warning, kind of like when Iran fired missiles at Diego Garcia as a warning to Europe.

Russia is praying for a military response. They’ve been telling their people the reason they are losing to Ukraine is they aren’t fighting Ukraine; they’re fighting NATO. Putin needs a reason to call for a general mobilization, and a military response would be propagandized into what Putin needs. NATO has not responded to the many provocations for that reason.
If Putin can mobilize his pay problems, go away. Everyone gets the same pittance you’d expect as a grunt. Mobilization is his only hope for getting a settlement he can call a win. For him, it’s life or death.
Putin’s problem is that he doesn’t really have anything to mobilize.
He can’t even put on a good parade.

Why not? The Rooskies have launched thousands of missiles and drones, and given the quality of their manufacturing, I’m sort of surprised this doesn’t regularly happen.
