There is not a single week without a German company announcing mass layoffs or closures.

...the German government is trapped in a vise of its own making. Wedded to a green goal - the much mocked, reviled, and refuted Energiewende - they cannot achieve without finishing off what's left of their once vibrant industrial base, leaders are powerless in the face of choices they could make, but which would require courage they do not possess.
It would be inconceivable to break the Borg-cube mindset. No current mainstream German politician wants to or would be 'that guy.'
That's why it was so surprising this past spring when there was the tiniest crack in the stern G Teutonic Green Waal that has cleaved to renewables as the country's future, come hell and astronomically high utility rates.
Perhaps it was because she felt safe. The German Energy Minister was out of the country for a conference, and had herself a lucid 'moment'discussing the additional strains on the energy sector the Iranian conflict had brought to bear.
Maybe, she posited publicly, we screwed up.
...Like shutting down those perfectly good nuclear reactors two years ago just to show the world they could and feel like superior beings, all at the same time.
Seemed a little short-sighted and pretentious, even then, and there are those who are tacitly admitting perhaps 'mistakes were made.'

Katherina Reiche, Germany's economy and energy minister, discussed the likely impact on the country's economy if the Iran conflict continues - as well as the need for a "correction" to energy policies in Europe, at a conference in the USA.
The collective gasp shot around the world. A similar reaction had been heard months earlier when Ursula von der Leyen, the unelected Empress of Europe and President of the European Commission, eerily presaged Minister Reiche's musings, calling the complete retreat from nuclear some member countries had subjected themselves to a 'strategic mistake.'
But this coming from the German government was more momentous, because the Germans were the torch holders, as Pyrrhic victors over fossil fuels. They purposefully decommissioned their last and perfectly operational nuclear reactors in mid-April of 2023, crowing about it as they did so.
...The German government and lunatics leading the renewables charge could care less. Nothing is more arrogant than a dismissive, “DONE DEAL” brush off, right?
…Wolfgang Kubicki, deputy leader of the Free Democrats, said in an interview with the Funke Media Group that Germany has the safest nuclear power plants worldwide and switching them off would be “a dramatic mistake” with painful economic and ecological consequences.
Others have said that the nuclear plants should be maintained as a fallback in case they are needed at a later date
But Scholz spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann told AP:
“The nuclear phase-out by April 15, that’s this Saturday, is a done deal.“
The question on everyone's mind was: were conditions now so intolerable that they were willing to eat crow?
It turns out, they are not.
They prefer misery.
The German legislature (Bundestag) has completed - what for them, I guess - is an exhaustive dive into 'Is it cool if we want to glow again?'
Reversibility of the nuclear phase-out
The answer is, 'nein.'
What it boils down to is the government outlawed nuclear in 2011, and no one has the slightest inclination to change a thing.

Tl;dr the government decided to make nuclear illegal in 2011, which is why it has to be illegal.
When today's legislators blame yesterday's legislators for a policy they know and admit is wrong, it becomes a question of democracy. Especially given that 3x as many Germans want to keep using nuclear as phase it out.

Perhaps the most important part of this statement is what *wasn't* said.
The German government didn't say it wasn't possible to repair or rebuild the reactors.
They didn't say it would be too expensive to embark on such a program.
They didn't say the power the reactors would provide isn't necessary.
They didn't say any of that because none of it is true.
They said something defensible: that it was a political decision to make nuclear illegal, and it remains illegal to this day.
The same people who made it illegal to begin with now use the fact that nuclear is illegal as the excuse not to restart nuclear.
Not that it couldn't be done.

CHEAPER THAN NEWBUILDS: The cost to bring back the 5 easiest-to-restart reactors is cheaper than any single Western nuclear newbuild currently under construction.
SUPPORTED BY THE PUBLIC: 61% of Germans support making use of existing nuclear in Germany, nearly three times the 22% who favor a complete phaseout and ban.
The missing ingredient remains political will.
In our conversations with the German Energy Minister, it was clear that with the right information, including a sober, accurate picture of what's actually possible, there's real interest in saving this energy supply.
Now, German nuclear industry leaders, several of whom informed our analysis, are urging support for restarts. In a letter sent to Chancellor Merz and members of Parliament, the authors wrote that “reactivating German nuclear power is technically a possible and sensible option,” attaching Radiant Energy Group's report for reference.
Germany once had one of the finest nuclear programs in the world. As more countries across the West recommit themselves to expanding nuclear, Germany has a unique chance to rebuild that expertise while directly addressing the energy cost and supply security issues it's facing.

If the Alternativ for Germany (AfD) begins polling even stronger and the voting reflects the polls - as it has in the regional contests so far - Alice Weidle's party is going to have enough seats that she won't need a coalition government and the cordon sanitaire's firewall effect to freeze the populist party out will be a thing of the past.
It's as if the three main coalition parties are handing the country over to her in real time when all it would have taken was a little humility and a nuclear plant or two.

So the German government can’t admit it was a mistake to import all of those Muzzies raping women.
