Abdul El-Sayed’s Fundraising on Private Charter Yachts for Islamic Charity Linked to Muslim Brotherhood Surfaces

The Washington Free Beacon has done some exceptional reporting on Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s past connections with the Muslim Brotherhood. Between March 23 and April 6, 2019, he headlined four private luxury yacht fundraisers for an Islamic nonprofit organization linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. One of those events hosted a speaker who has urged Muslims to “stand with” terrorist outfits Hamas and Hezbollah and stop “condemning antisemitism and condemning terrorism.”

The Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA) “Cruise for a Cause” events took place in Washington, DC, Miami, Chicago, and New York City, according to fliers posted on social media. The one for New York City was held on the Nautical Express, a “tri-level yacht” that hosts “high-end corporate event[s]” and features “space for up to 600 guests, full-service bars, elegant dining areas, and an open-air rooftop deck.”

“Cruising past landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Manhattan skyline, this tri-level yacht offers the perfect blend of luxury and iconic scenery,” promotional material for the event states. “Make your next occasion a standout moment aboard one of New York Harbor’s most impressive private charter yachts.”

He spoke at the event alongside the anti-Israel activist Amer Zahr, who told residents of Dearborn, Mich., during a 2017 rally, “whether it’s called Hamas, whether it’s called Hezbollah, we stand with everybody who stands against the Israeli occupation.”

El-Sayed promoted the $100-a-head events on his Facebook page, writing that he was “proud to be joining Islamic Relief USA” for a “cruise” to “celebrate and help support their work.” He spoke at the New York City and Washington, D.C., cruises alongside the Dearborn-based activist Amer Zahr, who expressed solidarity with Hamas and Hezbollah during a 2017 rally, telling residents of Dearborn, Mich., “whether it’s called Hamas, whether it’s called Hezbollah, we stand with everybody who stands against the Israeli occupation.” Four years later, in a social media video, Zahr took aim at “all the activists and leaders out there that are condemning antisemitism and condemning terrorism right now,” saying, “Stop it! Stop! You are not helping.”

Former IRUSA East Coast operations manager Yousef Abdallah also promoted the New York City fundraiser on Facebook, writing, “Come enjoy a good company on a heated boat.” In a since-deleted 2014 Facebook post, Abdallah said then-New Jersey governor Chris Christie (R.) “kneels down on his knees before the jewish lords and says ‘I am sorry.’ Only money makes stuff like this happen. … Muslims should remember this very well.”

Israel sanctioned IRUSA’s parent organization, Islamic Relief Worldwide, in 2014 over alleged support for Hamas. The House Ways & Means Committee also opened an investigation into both groups’ finances in 2024. IRUSA supplies nearly a third of Islamic Relief Worldwide’s annual revenues, which it allegedly funnels to Hamas.

The House Oversight Committee dubbed IRUSA a “prime example” of the influence that the Muslim Brotherhood has in the US back in 2018. Remember, the Muslim Brotherhood birthed Hamas in Gaza in 1988.

In addition to Abdallah, IRUSA CEO Ahmed Shehata—who contributed $500 to El-Sayed’s Senate campaign on March 10—has faced criticism for his participation in what the George Washington University Program on Extremism described as “Brotherhood-aligned activism.” Shehata was photographed at a pro-Brotherhood event in Seattle speaking in front of a banner with the group’s trademark “Rabia” symbol, which depicts a hand holding up four fingers, according to the Program on Extremism.

IRUSA director Esam Omeish, meanwhile, has donated $4,350 to El-Sayed’s Senate campaign. A former president of the Muslim American Society—which the House Oversight Committee describes as an “overt arm in the U.S. of the global Muslim Brotherhood”—Omeish urged Muslims in the early-2000s to embrace “the jihad way.”

El-Sayed is no stranger to Brotherhood-tied groups. His father-in-law, Tayeb Jukaku, is a founding member of the Islamic Society of North America, an Islamist group created by the Muslim Brotherhood and linked to Hamas financing, the Free Beacon reported. Jukaku has donated $300,000 to the largest PAC backing El-Sayed’s Senate campaign.

El-Sayed also defended the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood in a 2011 essay during the Arab Spring, touting its willingness to “compromise” with sectarian leaders after the overthrow of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. He dismissed concerns that the Brotherhood would mimic Hamas’s control of Gaza. The Trump administration designated the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization earlier this year for coordinating “possible terrorist activities” with Hamas.

El-Sayed also raised money with Squad member Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) back in 2019 for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), whom he claims to not be a member of but shares all its stances and has its backing.

It’s unknown exactly how much money was raised for the IRUSA on the four cruises. It will not be surprising if more connections to the Muslim Brotherhood bubble up concerning El-Sayed either.

Considering El-Sayed’s ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and terrorist organizations, it’s no surprise that presumptive Republican nominee, former Rep. Mike Rogers, now holds a double-digit lead over the Muslim frontman, according to The Hill, with just one week until the Michigan Senate primary.

Rogers leads El-Sayed by 10 points. 11 points are undecided, and he is neck and neck with Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI). Stevens has also received the endorsement of Governor Gretchen Whitmer, so things are thankfully not looking good for El-Sayed these days. And Senator John Fetterman is no fan of his either.

Michigan has been conquered from within by [radical] Islam. Saving itself begins at the ballot box. Voters need to ask themselves: Do they want a senator who has raised money for Muslim Brotherhood-connected organizations and has expressed hatred of Israel and Jews, while embracing terrorists, or do they want to reinstate freedom in their state that is devoid of “Civilization Jihad” by the likes of El-Sayed?

But, as often happens when self-righteousness emerges on the campaign trail, hypocrisy is not far behind.

The American Priorities PAC, a pro-Palestinian committee set up to counter AIPAC, said earlier this month it will “do whatever it takes” to get El-Sayed elected, including spending on his behalf.

In addition, the Washington Free Beacon reported this week that El-Sayed’s father-in-law, Jukaku Tayeb, contributed $200,000 to another independent committee, the Fighting for Michigan PAC, which was set up to boost El-Sayed’s Senate bid.

That could be dismissed as simply a father wanting to support his daughter’s husband, except for Tayeb’s background. The site reports he’s been a leader of the Islamic Society of North America, a group linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. The federal government named the Islamic Society as an unindicted co-conspirator in the terror financing trial of the Holy Land Foundation in 2007, when Tayeb was among the ISNA top leadership.

Several of the Holy Land Foundation’s founders were convicted of funneling $12 million to Hamas, the terror group that attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, triggering the Gaza War. The Islamic Society has since denounced Hamas terrorism and supported a two-state solution in the Middle East. But while it condemned the atrocities of Oct. 7, it didn’t call out Hamas by name.

That’s an important distinction. El-Sayed considers AIPAC cash to be blood-stained because of the Palestinians killed by Israel in Gaza. But not one of them would have died had Hamas not invaded Israel and committed its atrocities. The blood in Gaza is on Hamas’ hands, yet the genocide accusers have excused the terror group from responsiblity
