A frightening incident unfolded Tuesday at a day camp operating at the Lev Leviev School (Queens Gymnasia) in Queens when a man armed with a hammer allegedly entered the premises, shoved a child into a fence, and was quickly subdued by staff.
According to initial information obtained by YWN, the suspect, described as a black male, entered the camp carrying a hammer and allegedly shoved one of the children into a fence before counselors rushed to stop him.
The counselors tackled the suspect to the ground, and during the struggle, one counselor was bitten.
The suspect was taken into custody by the NYPD without further incident.
Queens Hatzalah responded to the scene and transported the injured child and the counselor to a local hospital for evaluation.
NYPD detectives remained at the scene Tuesday afternoon and are investigating the motive for the attack, including whether the incident should be classified as a hate crime.
The investigation is ongoing.
