Congress splits on war powers resolutions to force Trump to abandon Iran war

Congress on Thursday split on advancing a pair of war powers resolutions aimed at forcing President Donald Trump to abandon his war with Iran, as the conflict escalates into a deadly new phase and oil tops $100 a barrel.

The moves were the first vote since Trump informed Congress that he restarted the war with Iran following the breakdown of peace negotiations. The conflict’s revival after weeks of a shaky ceasefire comes just months before the U.S. midterm elections. It threatens to scramble the majority Republicans’ plan to maintain their razor-thin majorities.

The Senate on Thursday voted 47-49 to kill a joint resolution under the War Powers Act to force Trump to end hostilities with Iran. That chamber’s action follows a 214-208 House vote earlier in the day to approve a similar measure under the War Powers Act.

Even if Congress does try to force Trump to withdraw, he would be almost certain to veto anything that reaches his desk.

“There is no good way out of a bad war,” said Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., who offered the resolution in the Senate. “This is an opportunity for this Congress to finally take responsibility.”

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, voted for the resolution. Collins is locked in a tough reelection bid in a state that is now reliably blue. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the lone Democrat to vote against the measure.

Republicans argued before the vote that cutting off the administration’s ability to wage war now would tie their hands.

“If we vote now and Republicans voted to cut and run and force the president in the middle of this to withdraw, it would be a huge blow to American credibility,” said Sen. John Kennedy, R-La.

Kennedy downplayed concerns among voters with the war,

So, CNBC is on the side of the religion of hate, rape, lying, and misogyny? No wait, we knew that already. No problem, when the revolt occurs, CNBC (and most of the mediaP will be considered as part of the recipients of what’s coming).

The Dems, Socialists and weak kneed GOP are giving aid and comfort to the Iranian enemy.

They know stalling is producing disintegration to the resolve to protect freedom as the Left and news media encourage the enemy IN AN ACTIVE SHOOTING WAR WITH ARMED FORCES AT RISK.

Sorry to shout.

Iran’s only viable path to victory is thru the Democrat party. As usual the RATs only care about the acquisition of power. Acting evil to get it? Standard Operating Procedure.

It’s nice to know murderous Persian theocracy thugs have adequate representation in our US Congress. Maybe the DNC could loan them a few nukes?

Every time we mention Iran/Persia, we should call them Aryan. It is literally why they changed their name from Persia to Iran in the 1930s after Nazi's in Germany started spouting Aryan supremacy mess.

Saying "Iran" is their version of saying "Aryan".

I’m sorry, Senator Leghorn, the chance to give this war any credibility was tossed by the administration when they pursued it without the authorization of Congress.

It’s only get to more less popular and politically poisonous from here.

They give aid and comfort to and encourage our enemies. Not as phoney-baloney headline - the vote took place. You have a problem with the verb “force”? That was the intent. Will it have effect, no.

Trump should stand up and ask for a declaration of war if it is such a threat...I don’t think it is all that much of a threat.. Be bold Trump and ask Congress!
