Mike Lindell, the Trump-endorsed Republican candidate for Minnesota governor, drew sharp criticism Wednesday after proposing a six-month amnesty period that would allow illegal immigrants with no other criminal history to register for non-expiring conditional work visas.
"I'd like the whole United States to do this, but let's say I did it here in Minnesota," Lindell said in a Tuesday interview. "Six months, all the illegal immigrants would have to go get what's going to be called a conditional work visa."
Lindell outlines conditional visa plan
Under Lindell's proposal, Minnesota would impose a six-month deportation moratorium while illegal immigrants register, submit fingerprints, and undergo criminal background checks. Applicants would not receive citizenship or voting rights, but the conditional visas would not expire.
"I'm a person of second chances, if the only thing they ever did was cross the border and didn't report back in because they were afraid of being re-deported," Lindell said.
"Now, you're not a citizen," he added. "You can't vote, but you have this card that now you can work and you can go be paying taxes, be functioning in society."

It’s been proposed before.
It would always fail because eventually, they all get citizenship rights. Politicians and their offspring will see to that.
I’m sick of illegals giving citizens no chances, I say kick them all out and good riddance.
ouch!
Way to read the room.
Illegal entry is is a crime
Lindell lost it for me.
I hate to be cynical, but it looks like someone doesn't want to pay the wages citizens demand to stuff pillows.
His labor is probably 100% foreign.
camel nose in the tent. six months turns into an extension. Before you can say “cheap labor” we have DReamers giving birth to americans.
Clown move. Trump should withdraw endorsement.
To be fair, we did it in the '80s under the Reagan Administration and we were supposed to secure our borders after that.
Lindell is should know better.
At least he had the decency to say this upfront instead of doing the classic rug pull after being elected that so many here love falling for. He might not be smart enough to get elected.
“I’m a person of second chances,…
You earn a second chance. It’s not just given for no reason, and facing the consequences of deportation doesn’t qualify. You want a second chance, go back to wherever you are from and apologize for being here illegally, then ask to return legally.
It can’t be all no wall and it can’t be all wall.
The fact is we need good citizens. I know a few that i would personally sponsor.
Addiction has consequences, even later in life. Why are all our supposed maga politicians siding with the amnesty klan? This really stinks. And our feckless leaders in Congress haven’t even put a stop to the birthright citizenship debacle yet. We’re screwed!
I expected better from him.
On Vince Coglianese today, I heard that over 40 GOP Congress critters have signed on to this, along with the RATs. (I think I heard it correctly.)
Looks like Lindell just kicked himself out of the race.
The ‘86 amnesty was worse. It was explicitly to give them citizenship.
At the time, only a few understood the long term implications.
The current disaster stems entirely from that colossal mistake.
Deport him with the other interlopers.
