Russian firing exercise off UK coast ‘irresponsible’, says Wes Streeting

A Russian warship firing its weapons off the British coast on Monday was “performative and irresponsible”, Wes Streeting has said.

New Defence Secretary Mr Streeting also warned “Russia should be in no doubt about the resolve of this Government and this Prime Minister” in his first engagement in the job.

The live-fire exercise took place 40 nautical miles (46 miles) off the coast of Plymouth on Monday, the same day Andy Burnham entered Government as the new Prime Minister.

The Royal Navy “continues to track the vessel’s activity closely, and stands ready to protect UK national security”, a Ministry of Defence spokesperson said.

Mr Streeting was asked for his response to the incident, as he welcomed defence ministers from Japan, Italy and Canada to London to discuss the Global Combat Air Programme, a pact between the countries to develop a new generation of fighter jets.

What’ll the Royal Navy (er, make that one of the remaining few Royal Muslim Navy ships) do about it? Fart in their general direction?

It’s deliberately provocative certainly. But what are the British going to do about it?!

The UK Defense Secretary said:

If only the USA had more of a foothold in Greenland...maybe even make it a Territory.

To do what? Demand the U.S. come save them?

Not a bad strategy if we bailed out the Brits twice.

“New Defence Secretary Mr Streeting also warned “Russia should be in no doubt about the resolve of this Government and this Prime Minister” “

there’s just one thing wrong with semi-tough talk like that: the Brits don’t have anything to “resolve” with: only a single blue-sea boat or sub that is capable of leaving its dock, namely the destroyer, HMS Dragon, which was sent to Cyprus, and then to the Persian Gulf area, you know, to take part in “joint” naval activities against Iran ...

Sadly... Wes Streeting wouldn’t know a ‘firing exercise’ if it hit him in the head. He has absolutely no military experience of any sort... And now he’s in charge of the military. Probably a very bad idea.

The UK Carrier Strike Group, led by flagship HMS Prince of Wales, recently concluded the first phase of its 2026 mission in the Arctic and North Atlantic, known as Operation Firecrest.

The task group is returning to its home base of Portsmouth to allow for maintenance before resuming operations in the autumn.

The first three-month phase of the 2026 deployment:Mission objective: Preserving security along NATO’s Northern Flank and deterring aggression.

Task group components: The flagship HMS Prince of Wales, the Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan, and the tanker RFA Tidespring.Aviation component:

Embarked F-35B fighter jets alongside rotary-wing aircraft and uncrewed autonomous systems.Key activities: Operations in the Norwegian Sea, NATO air-policing missions around Iceland, and participation in the multi-national Exercise Neptune Strike.

[so: UK “task force” equals: one diesel powered aircraft carrier, one Destroyer, and one tanker; sails for three months not too far from home, and then must return for maintenance after only three months. got it.]
