Shipping insider says "nothing is going through" the Strait of Hormuz, despite U.S. insisting it's open
CBS News ^ | July 22, 2026

he U.S. military's Central Command repeated an assertion on Tuesday evening that has been made by the Trump administration many times over the last two weeks, insisting that "despite Iranian aggression, the Strait of Hormuz remains open for commercial vessel traffic."

Despite the U.S. president and military continuing to urge vessels to use a southern route through the strait, in defiance of Iran's threats, few shippers seem willing to risk it.

The Joint Maritime Information Center in Bahrain, a military partnership that includes the U.S., said commercial traffic in the Strait of Hormuz fell to a three-week low on Tuesday amid ongoing Iranian attacks. CBS News tracked just three commercial ships — two cargo vessels and the Chinese-owned tanker Hsin Ocean — transiting the strait on Tuesday.

Between July 13 and 19, only two ships transited the strait using the U.S.-backed southern route that hugs the coast of Oman. Both transits were dark, meaning the vessels had turned off their AIS broadcast systems, according to a Lloyd's List analysis.

If SeeBS Snooze is able to track ships, why do they need to rely in information from a shipping insider? Gas prices remain below 5 dollars a gallon here in my neck of Commiefornia so I'm thinking some oil tankers are getting through.

I thought Trumps decision to close the Strait was a great idea. He evidently didn’t. He changed his mind the very next day.

If millions of dollars of cargo are being risked and the insurance company senses a loss, the countries sending the ships will back off until it’s safe. No matter the rhetoric.

A BS trolling fake news post. The Marine Traffic monitoring live accounts real time track vessels and preponderance of them are ID’d and moving through the Strait. That is, those that are not 1.) Iranian registry or 2.)point of origin from an Iranian port. #2 vessels are prevented from through and exiting the Strait.

In 2025 the average traffic was 20 million BBL/day and 70 ships transiting.

If we’re at 1/10th of that, I’ll eat my hat.

Yes, the Strait has been effectively closed by Iran.

West Texas Intermediate was about $60/barrel pre-war.

It’s now about $87.

It fell to $70 in about 45 days (mid-May to very early July).

Higher oil prices cost oil consumers about $2 billion/day.

Governments (PRC, India, etc.) could buy tankers and probably Gulf crude at close to pre-war pricing.

The Iranians would have to sink 10 $100 million tankers carrying $100 million in crude each and every day to be as costly as doing nothing.

Smaller and older tanker might be bought and used for a smaller financial risk.

Tankers can be sent through the Strait unmanned under autopilot.

i pretty much always get my news from “shipping insiders” because they’re such trusted sources, e.g., there’s zero possibility that “shipping insiders” might just be IRGC flacks ...
