Sunday morning, July 5, 2026. St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effingham, Illinois, sat peaceful under a quiet sky. Volunteers had just begun to arrive to prepare for services. Just the ordinary rhythm of a house of worship going about its day. Then a man driving a stolen car slipped inside, asking for the pastor.
Church security didn’t blink. They noticed the out-of-state plates and saw the man approach. Safety team members made contact as he entered. The man asked for the pastor, but the safety volunteers sensed something was wrong. They called 911.
Police rolled in. There was a struggle. A gun was produced. One shot was fired. From the details it sounds like it might have been an attempted suicide. Either way, the intruder went down with life-threatening wounds. A few days later, he died of his injuries.
Thankfully no innocents were hit. No blood on the pews. No parents clawing through wreckage crying out for their kids. The pastor lived. Tragedy was averted, prevented by extraordinary vigilance.

Our pastor actively encourages qualified parishioners to carry in church, and I think there’s more than a few who do.
We have it covered.
My church hires an off duty cop in uniform to stand guard and the city allows him use of a parked police car while working Sundays.
Plus, there are untold concealed carry worshipers.
Most suspicious people are really just passing through and need food and gas. No money, of course.
He dealt his own Suicide Card.
Just about every church in the state has security.
Many instances of the local Somalis and atheists trying to take over church services or coming in to break things... so there is now a force available.
Nothing makes the papers.

I feel many times safer knowing worshippers are CCWing. Gun free zones are asking for slaughter.
Sometimes when the jackets of men in the church flip open for a second or two I feel safe.
Several years ago there was video from a camera in the back of a southern church, and it covered pretty much the whole congregation. A man came in and walked down a side aisle to the front and brandished a long gun.
The video showed little old ladies taking guns from their purses. They were prepared to take care of business. It made my heart happy.
Our pastor began getting death threats about 10 years ago. He retired, but we still have weekly security provided by the local police department.
My husband carries at church. Our pastor is fine with it. I don’t know if anyone else there carries. We attended a wedding yesterday, and one of the family members had his gun holstered right out in the open. My husband carries his in the building in a case, but then lays it on the pew once we sit down.
All our security folks carry and have to submit proficiency results one a year. Plenty of others probably carry. The town has a small police force but we are in the Township, covered by the State Police.
My church is not a gun free zone. Their are a lot of guns in my church. Mostly in the hands of ex cops, ex military, and just shooters. My church is safe.
President Don Le’Mon has a plan.
Security is a major expense item at our church
We just left one after 17 years. They steadfastly refused to stand up any sort of safety protocols, not even locking the remote doors.
Our current place has a visible team.
We have three porters per Mass. Two outside, one inside. Most carry. Some of the ushers carry. A large number of the dads carry.

Our California parish does not have a safety committee of which I am aware, but the last couple of times I was in Texas, the churches we went to seemed to have men who were not ushers at the front of the church, and a couple around the perimeter. One church was suburban, and the other was located in a small city. It grieves me to think this is necessary. But it also makes me happy that there are people who would be willing to take up this ministry for the safety of the Parishioners.
