A terror group from Egypt told the FBI it was responsible for downing TWA Flight 800 and killing all 230 people aboard, according to newly surfaced FBI records featured in a new documentary marking the 30th anniversary of the tragedy.
An explosive claim buried in a trove of newly obtained Freedom of Information Act documents is reviving decades-old questions about whether a missile or bomb brought down the Boeing 747-100 off Long Island on July 17, 1996.
Among the records obtained by the transparency nonprofit Judicial Watch is a New York teletype dated two days after the crash, case file 265A-NY-259028: “FBI headquarters received faxes generated from Cairo claiming credit for the destruction of the aircraft,” the cable states.

This is an absolute LIE. TWA 800 was accidentally shot down by a U.S. Navy missile.
I guess we just didn’t need to know that.🙄
That is a lie spread around by the dingaling Justin Raimondo who, as I recall, had some peculiar associations who would have an interest in creating that story.
I thought they said this was caused by an explosion caused by vapors in the empty center fuel tank.

Further investigation showed the center fuel cell cracked and leaked fuel that was ignited by the engines ... the appearance of a missile was due to the fuel being ignited far behind the plane and traveled up to the remaining fuel plus fumes which then exploded.
The conspiracy theory has been going on for years.
Wrong, everyone knows it was friction heating up fuel sloshing around in the center tank. Same reason cars and trucks are constantly erupting in fireballs.
A SPARK IT WUZ......
Sure. And then after blowing the whole front end off the airplane, the airplane climbed another 10,000 feet.
Agreed, the conspiracy theory is ridiculous.
They said it. Doesn't mean it's true.
Just the electric ones.
Inertia! The forward momentum carried it up. Every aviation seminar I’ve attended this subject always comes up and with an audience of a couple hundred pilots and aviation people the conclusion is always the same - center fuel tank rupture and fuel ignited from the back up to the front where it exploded the remaining fuel and fumes ....
The same thing happened to a B737 parked at the Manila airport ... somehow the center fuel tank sprung a leak, the fuel drained away and then was ignited from a distance of about a hundred feet - the flame went right up to the tank and that was it.
Concerning witnesses who saw a streak of light just before the crash.
Investigation into the testimony of:
258 streak of light witnesses.
599 fireball witnesses
200 fireball split.

Funny how all of a sudden this “info” is released.
Exactly, normal climb rate for a 74 at that altitude is about 2,000 fpm, TWA was climbing at about 900 fpm at the time.
CAVU
True, there was two 73s that had the same thing happen—both in very hot weather. Boeing put out an AD requiring center pumps to always be turned off when fuel tanks are empty.
I’m sorry, but do you really think the flat plate frontal area of a 747 fuselage would not create the drag to prevent such a climb?
