Former Iranian president Ahmadinejad 'is put under house arrest by regime over secret dealings with Israel in plan to install him as new leader'

Former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been put under house arrest by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after intelligence authorities uncovered his secret dealings with Israel, The New York Times has claimed.

For years, Israel conducted a covert operation aimed at grooming Ahmadinejad as an intelligence asset who could be installed as Iran's new leader, American and Iranian sources told the newspaper.

Israel even secretly transferred money to Ahmadinejad for housing and travel, while operatives met him abroad on several occasions.

The discovery of the secret relationship is shocking given that Ahmadinejad was known for accelerating Tehran's nuclear programme, calling regularly for the destruction of Israel and denying the Holocaust.

The clandestine operation culminated in February this year, during the early days of the US-Israeli war on Iran, with an audacious attempt to relocate the former leader.

The ambition was to set in motion the toppling of the current regime, and to install Ahmadinejad as leader, who had been living under strict surveillance in Tehran.

But the grand plan failed.

On February 28, Ahmadinejad's compound was struck by an Israeli airstrike aiming towards the building of his bodyguards and his armoured vehicle.

Following the strike, a black Peugeot car arrived, picked up Ahmadinejad, and took him away at high speed from the dramatic scene, according to four senior Iranian officials.

The vehicle was driven by agents of Mossad, who whisked Ahmadinejad away to a secret safe house in Iran, American and Iranian officials said.

But the former Iranian president was discontented with the chaotic rescue operation, and apparently appeared disillusioned about Mossad's plan to return him to power.

Ahmadinejad subsequently left the safe house under circumstances that are still unclear, and was not seen in public until last Monday when he made an appearance at the funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Correct. Clearly remember numerous reports that Ahmamdickhead was taken out early on. But with this war the propaganda has been thick on both sides.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was believed to have been one of the students who participated in the takeover of the US embassy in 1979. While president, he began and ended every speech with a prayer for the return of the Mahdi. In my opinion he was a diehard through-to-the-bone Twelver. Twelvers believe the Mahdi...The Twelfth Imama who isn’t dead but in hiding...will return when the Middle East is in flames. In flames is interpreted today as nuclear war. When the Mahdi returns everyone will die, Islam will reign supreme and...paradise. Yeah, that makes as much sense as getting thirty virgins after death.

I don’t believe there’s any way in Hell that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is working for the West. However, accusing him of that is an easy way to eliminate a rival.

From the article:

I don't know who those sources are, or how reliable. But some of them are American. I don't think the paper would lie about that.

The IRGC should feel free to fire at all suspects.

It saves the IDF and US military work.

If the IRGC doubts anyone, it should make 100% sure the person can do no harm.

Can the top army people be trusted?

Perhaps the army people who might have been thinking should be replaced by army people who need not have been thinking.

The article's theory is that he was bought by Israel. Naturally, he had to maintain a facade of being militantly anti-Israel.

Whether that's true, who knows? But the Mossad pulls some surprising rabbits out of its hat at times.

He saw himself as a Boris Yeltsin figure who could "reform" Iran, recognize Israel and join the Abraham Accords, according to the article.

It could be disinformation “accidentally” leaked to stir up infighting in the regime. Then again, it could be based on factual events. Either way it gins up paranoia among regime insiders, which is still a good thing for us.

It sounds like there is a war between the IRGC and the political elements. That might account for some of the contradictory behavior coming out of Iran.
