A Hungarian conservative influencer was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8th and has since been released after spending several hours in custody, in a case that seems to confirm the new, pro-Brussels Hungarian government’s authoritarian tendencies.
István Szakács was taken into custody in the western city of Győr after police searched his home. Eight officers arrived shortly after 6 a.m., carried out a house search, and took him away for questioning.
The police said they were investigating Szakács on suspicion of making threats related to a terrorist offence. The allegation stems from a Facebook video in which he warned liberal Prime Minister Péter Magyar not to attempt to have his predecessor, conservative Viktor Orbán arrested in connection with the Ukrainian “gold convoy” scandal.
In the post, Szakács said that if Orbán were taken into custody, “500,000 Hungarians” would come to free him “wherever he is.”
Szakács was released after approximately four hours in police custody. Speaking afterwards to daily Magyar Nemzet, he said officers from the National Bureau of Investigation had taken DNA samples from him before the questioning.
He rejected the allegation of ‘terrorism,’ arguing that his comments referred to political protest and public solidarity rather than any attempt to storm a protected facility. “The police wanted me to admit that I had encouraged people to free Viktor Orbán physically. That is absurd,” he said.

Magyar Is supposedly conservative. He’s also pro-EU. One cannot be both.
So how can you tell what he really is? Szakács was arrested for something political he posted online. That’s a *very* EU move. Silence all opposition!
Conclusion: Magyar is drifting into EU stooge territory.
Uninteresting side point: Szakács was taken into custody in the city of Győr. One branch of my family comes from Győr. I wonder if we’re related.
The Russian smear campaign against Magyar is starting already!
Guess the BorisBots still haven’t gotten over Orban getting the boot, so now they’re up to their usual dirty tricks
And you play right along, of course ...
No surprise here...
Yeah we had some here who swore Magyar was not a Soros/EU hack and Orban had to go. Well those fools have been pretty quiet and scarce since this took the mask off.
Magyar says he is conservative.
Mitt Romney identified himself as “severely Conservative”.
Both lied.
> And you play right along, of course ... <
I don’t quite follow. As I mentioned previously, my family has strong roots in Hungary. Viktor Orbán is a hero of mine. He puts Hungary first. In many ways he’s the Hungarian Trump.
The topic under discussion here has nothing to do with Russia or Ukraine. It’s about the arrest of some guy for something political he said online. His comments had nothing to do with Russia or Ukraine.
I suspect you are seeing something that’s really not there.
At the time, Hungarian government officials, Austrian right-wing politicians, as well as several analysts questioned why enormous amounts of cash and gold were being transported across borders rather than transferred via standard financial systems.
While the scandal points to potential large-scale corruption within the Ukrainian government, it is Orbán and his previous cabinet that are being investigated.
Just thought I'd highlight this bit from the article, which I had not otherwise heard about.
Told you so.
Did you? I don’t recall having much hope that Magyar would turn out to be conservative. I may have expressed such a hope (springs eternal and all that), but given the EU’s interest in subverting Hungarian independence I figured it way more likely he’d be the Hungarian version of a RINO, at best.
> Sure sounds like a threat to me ... <
I’ve got to disagree with you there. Saying a large number of people would turn up to angrily protest, that’s is not a threat. It’s a prediction.
> So, it’s hardly a police state to just ask questions ... <
Dragging someone down to a police station is more than just asking questions. It’s a form of intimidation. Which the EU is very good it.
> if you want a REAL police state, go to Pootin’s Russia <
Totally, 100% agree. I have mentioned this elsewhere. I consider Putin to be a war criminal. Yet Orbán worked with him to some extent. Because it was in Hungary’s interests to do so.
And as a side note, most of my older Hungarian relatives are gone now. But every last one of them hated the Russians. NOT the people, the government. Same goes with the Hungarian-Americans I know now.
It’s a vestige of Hungary’s occupation by the USSR. Hungarians have long memories about such things.
Yes, Russia is far from a free country. But what of your Canada, steeped in corruption, victim disarmament, high crime and autocratic leaders who shut down dissidents with tactics like debanking with no due process? Or England which arrests people at a far higher rate than Russia for crimes like silently praying outside an abortion clinic or criticizing a government that arrests white victims over the criminals attacking them. Similar suppression of liberty exists in Germany, France, Spain, Norway, everywhere the EU bureaucracy holds sway. What would it take for you to admit your hypocrisy?
You Russian apologists are funny.
Once again - I can criticize Canada’s leader and NOT get thrown in jail. I can also criticize England’s leader in England, and NOT get thrown in jail. Same deal in the US.
BUT, if I try to criticize Russia’s leader in Russia, I get thrown in jail or out a window.
See the difference?
The first 3 countries are all free, but Russia is a police-state hellhole.
You Pootin apologists just can’t understand that difference, can you?
FYI….Canuck Conservative is known POS troll!!
Okay, so not Rod Dreher?
As I will continually point out, I believe the Russians are in the wrong side on every geopolitical issue (Cuba, Venezuela, the Sahel, Nicaragua, Burma, China, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Israel and so on), except for Ukraine. On Ukraine they are in the right, and the EU/Washington elites are a good deal more demonic and wrong than the more mundane corruption endemic to Russian governance.
It's like with Canada. The US cannot allow Canada to be ideogically captured or fall to a coup and become a staging ground for an anti-US alliance such as might be headed by China or the EU. If that were to happen we would be absolutely justified in militarily overrunning it and establishing it as a protectorate under American military control.
Consider that the average Ukrainian is fighting for absolutely nothing positive. The right to be brainwashed with leftist propaganda, to have their children indoctrinated in LGBTQ ideology until they mutilate or infect themselves while destroying any chance of having a family and hope for the future. The domination and suppression of Russian majorities in Crimea and the east that naturally prefer life with Moscow rather than Kiev (so much for democracy and self-determination!) The corruption of the Hunter Bidens of the West rather than Russian oligarchs. For the next step in a generation of NATO expansion and aggression that would next lead to war within Russia, and Ukraine against as a battleground.
Never has a people destroyed itself for a more stupid set of reasons. The power of propaganda in the West has grown strong indeed.
There is a steady flood of news these days refuting your exaltation of England, Canada, etc. as "free." I grew up in the Detroit area but after experiencing police corruption on my last trip to Canada 20 years ago I gave up visiting. I'm much safer in El Salvador or even Guatemala or Honduras in my experience.
Always hilarious, you BorisBots complain endlessly about “authoritarianism” in Europe, but don’t say SQUAT about Pootin’s Police-state shithole in Russia
Never fails to amuse!
