SAWYER, Mich. (AP) — A completed bridge linking Detroit and Canada is expected to open by the end of the month after U.S. and Canadian officials reached an agreement to resolve the dispute that delayed its debut, according to two people directly involved in the negotiations.

The sources were not authorized to publicly disclose the deal before a formal announcement.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for early June was postponed after the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said the two countries needed more time to resolve “outstanding issues.” The delay followed President Donald Trump’s earlier threats to block the bridge’s opening.

Commercial traffic is now expected to begin before Aug. 1, according to two officials, though a date for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony has not yet been set.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers referenced the deal during an interview Friday.

“I had a conversation with the secretary yesterday, Secretary of Commerce Lutnick, and the deal will be announced in the next few days,” Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers said Friday on WJR radio. “This is getting wrapped up. That bridge is going to get open.”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, congratulated those who have worked to open the bridge.

“This bridge is a testament to the enduring partnership between Michigan and Canada and what we can get done when we think big and bet on our shared future together,” she said in a statement.

The delay in opening the Gordie Howe International Bridge became an issue in one of the country’s most closely watched Senate races. Democratic candidate Mallory McMorrow, who has since dropped out, tried to turn the controversy into a political liability for Trump and Republicans.

The 1.5-mile-long (2.4-kilometer-long) bridge, which spans the Detroit River and connects the Motor City with Windsor, Ontario, was slated for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 12. It was abruptly postponed...

Detroit is pronounced Dea Twawh. That’s French. We should pay for the bridge provided they take the city and make it part of Canada where they could get single payer health care. Lots of empty property there just ripe for French speaking immigrants from Haiti-France even.

Turn Michigan red. Too pie in the sky.

Does the name Brock Osweiler ring a bell? Terrible QB. Signed a $72 million-4 year contract and promptly stunk. That was 2016. 2017 comes along(one year later) and they trade him PLUS a 2nd round draft pick in return for-get this-a FOURTH round pick. The receiving team(Cleveland Browns)picked up the rest of his contract and promptly cut him. It was in essence a free 2nd round pick for money.

We need to offer Detroit to Canada.

Trump’s the man to do it. He knows real estate.

When the deal is done he can call for an independent Quebec. As much as he knows real estate he knows more how to disturb the excrement. If we have that little enclave Port Roberts, Washington they can have the Lions and Tigers. Bears? Think Indiana.

Canada is actually SOUTH of Detroit.

It would be best for all concerned if we just ceded Detroit To Canuckistan.

Ive been telling Canadians that they can still use the bridge, until they get to the border.

They can use the bridge as much as they want.

“LOL ! 8 years to build a 1 1/2 mile long bridge ! “

If you think that is bad can you imagine CA trying this? 50 years and 3/4 of a $trillion, we wouldn’t live long enough to see the finish.

I remember a bridge between Detroit & Windsor;drove on it many years ago. Apparently that was an old bridge & now they have a new one? The old one must have been good enough at the time.

They both exist and will continue on. The new bridge has some advantages for trucking since it directly connects to main highways on both sides. That isn’t the case with the old bridge or the tunnel. It should make it much easier to move through the whole area. The main reason it was built.
