Gov. Beshear urges McConnell to be ‘transparent’ and give an update on his health

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is asking Mitch McConnell, the senior senator from his state, for an update on his health and whether he believes he can continue to serve in the role.

Beshear, a Democrat, sent a letter to McConnell’s office on Wednesday urging the senator to be “transparent” as “Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the current state of your health and wellbeing, and ability to hold office in the United States Senate.”

Beshear’s letter comes 24 days after the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was first hospitalized following a medical emergency that his office has declined to elaborate on.

Since then, there has been rampant speculation about McConnell’s condition on both the left and the far right.

NBC News reported last week that paramedics had conducted CPR on an individual experiencing a “cardiac arrest” at a known address for McConnell on June 14, the same day his office disclosed he had been hospitalized. But the office has not provided any information about why he was hospitalized, what his current condition is or when he might return to the Senate.

“Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the health and well-being of Sen. McConnell. As Governor — and a fellow public official who understands the commitment we’ve made to the people we serve — I am requesting the Senator provide an update on his current health status,” Beshear said in a statement accompanying his letter.

It was not an issue when Joe Biden was in the White House.

He’s inpatient in the hospital.

Normally when that occurs, you aren’t in that great of health.

Let’s take a hypothetical: Beshear is the California governor during Diane Feinstein’s last few months in the U.S. Senate. People see Feinstein sleeping in congressional hearings but Beshear will keep his mouth shut. Beshear won’t demand that Feinstein reveal her medical condition.
For McConnell to stay in the hospital this long (over a month) means McConnell is in bad shape. At best, McConnell may end up like Fetterman where he was absent from the senate for an extended period of time and then return to the senate, well enough to walk in an exercise outfit to attend Trump’s second inauguration.

I suspect we will not hear anything until the mandated special election date is passed in Aug.

Fact: the Republican run Kentucky legislature removed the power to select a replacement Senator from the governor. If the Turtle can’t come back we pick his replacement: if he can come back he is the same scumbag he was before. This is a break even or win for us and a break even lose for the rodents.

He desperately wants to appoint a rat to replace Mitch. That is what this is.

Definitely. Trump’s pick Andy Barr will take over in Jan 2027 if McConnell lasts that long.

I still think there’s more going on here than anyone knows. It’s impossible to corroborate Scott Jenning’s report - a man who owes his entire career to Mitch McConnell Loomer wasn’t the only one with the “brain-dead” story. There’s been no public release of information about his condition since he was found unconscious on Jun 14. Now all out a sudden out of the blue - he’s fit as a fiddle (although a hospitalized fiddle) and yakking with one of his closest friends and protege.

Why now? What connects all these dots? Kentucky law requires a special election if he were to die or resign before his term ends. BUT it also spells out a timeline and if that happened after Aug. 3, it would create a legal question and many say the seat would just remain vacant until the November election. Can they run out the clock? Who benefits if they do?

Didn’t the legislature pass an amendment to their Constitution that says the replacement must be from the same party as the seated Senator.
