The Kremlin is planning an armed incursion on Polish land to test Nato's response, according to Washington.
The provocation could see Putin's troops cross over into Poland, and vital infrastructure could be targeted by missiles and drones.
Sources close to Polish President Karol Nawrocki told news outlet Onet that the US had been warning Warsaw about the plan for a while.
Russia's plan aims to start a crisis to scare Western nations into stopping their support for Ukraine.
Polish security experts also warned that Russia and Belarus might send a small number of troops across the Nato border.
Power stations could also be targeted in the incursion, through air strikes that would force Poland to activate its air defence systems.
According to Polish sources cited by Onet, Russia could frame a territorial incursion as either a GPS navigation error or an emergency helicopter recovery.
Moscow's strategy relies on the assumption that the US would compel Poland to negotiate rather than engage militarily.
A peaceful, negotiated retreat would be treated as a strategic win for the Kremlin, which could leverage the talks to demand a halt to Western military assistance for Ukraine.
And in a worst-case scenario for Nato, Russia would aim to undermine Polish sovereignty, force the withdrawal of Western support for Ukraine and expose Nato as a paper tiger.
According to sources, a ground-based attack could come from Kaliningrad - which borders northern Poland - or from Belarus to the east.
Russia depends on targeted, limited provocations to probe Nato's defences, as its military is too heavily committed in Ukraine to launch a major war.
Although Poland is a vital security partner for Ukraine, their alliance has recently fractured over agricultural trade and past historical grievances. Moscow is expected to try to worsen this divide
A source close to the Polish president said that the US 'systematically informs Poland about ever-new Russian plans for a conventional attack on Nato's eastern flank, from which Poland is by no means excluded.'
Two separate sources - an ambassador to one of Poland's allies in the Nato alliance and a source in the Polish defence ministry - also confirmed that there is a serious risk of an incursion in Poland and the Baltic States.
However, European security sources also said that a provocation targeting Poland would be more useful than targeting the Baltics.
Speaking to The Telegraph, a Baltic security source said Moscow was currently discussing these plans.
Russia reportedly may attempt to pin the provocation on Ukraine after it is carried out.

FR Putin squadies. You will have a chance to cheer on your anti-globohomo savior. If Vlad invades. Plus this might involve the USA and Trump while Iran is on his mind.
Is Putin in the room with you now?
This is idiotic. It’s not going to happen. The UK is trying to manipulate opinion against Russia once again.
I believe the Russian military is stretched too thin to even think about this just now. And Putin himself can’t push his foes out of a tenth-floor window as fast as they’re multiplying, IMO.
This seems rather unlikely

There’s a reason why it’s called the Daily Fail!
“ The Kremlin is planning an armed incursion on Polish land to test Nato’s response”
No it’s not.
One of the resident Kremlin spokespeople will right over to issue the denial.
You are a masterful debunker! I am in awe of you.
I sure hope nobody messes with Poland. It might me the world’s best hope for freedom.
Dominik Tarczyński, on the European Parliament from Poland, was on Rob Schmitt’s show last night. He told how Poland is forbidding Muslims to emigrate there.
Rob asked him if he was afraid he might be called a racist. He said he didn’t care. Something like, “You can call me a pink elephant if you want to. I’m doing it for my future wife and children.”
A very bold man. Too bad we don’t have people like him in our government. Our critters ARE afraid of being called racists.
They don't care about our opinion.
They care about dragging the US military into their foreign policy overreach.
“One of the resident Kremlin spokespeople will right over to issue the denial.”
You mean the know nothing isolationists, who double as Vlad’s local fan club.
NATO? I am not sure Russia can handle Poland by itself right now! People need to see how much Poland has invested into its military, and how much its private sector has grown. Maybe the Russians, after fighting with Ukraine for 5 years, need to test themselves against a stronger opponent to see if they can make societal collapse quicker?
I strongly doubt that Putin would consider such a stupid approach. More likely this is just little z people looking for more money. However, if I am wrong and Putin wants to experience utter failure, they could try this. More likely Putin is looking for a good way to end the war he already enjoined.
Ha ha ha ha ha. What’s pootz going to do, send in a hundred drunks on donkeys? The Charge of the Braying Brigade?
This is idiotic. It’s not going to happen. The UK is trying to manipulate opinion against Russia once again.

There is an air of manipulation in the story. I will believe it when I see it happen.
You people will believe anything.
“NATO? I am not sure Russia can handle Poland by itself right now! People need to see how much Poland has invested into its military, and how much its private sector has grown.”
Note that this would just be an incursion (troops in and out within a week) to shake up NATO that has been funding Ukraine. To make NATO fearful of aiding Ukraine. Such as Germany has been manufacturing drones for Ukraine.
This Putin incursion would be accompanied by drone attacks and maybe some missiles.
Of all unknown sources, this is the most unknown.
Since Russia doesn’t border Poland this could not be presented as anything other than an invasion.
And where is Putin going to get the fuel to risk a war with NATO. His own people would kill him. Luchashenko isn’t ready to have his head on a pike either.
