Former Sen. Manchin urges Fetterman to ‘set yourself free’ by becoming an independent

Former Sen. Joe Manchin, the Democrat-turned-independent from West Virginia, is recommending that Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) follow in his path and leave the Democratic Party.

“My observation, and recommendation from observation, would be, John, trust me, set yourself free and become an independent,” Manchin said in a Tuesday morning phone interview with the Washington Examiner. “It’s liberating.”

Manchin, who left the Democratic Party in 2024 and opted not to seek a third term that same year, said if Fetterman wants to work with both sides of the aisle, becoming an independent would allow the Pennsylvania Democrat to “speak as a real, true, free, free broker.”

“John Fetterman is voting what he believes is right for his people and what he can explain, and I appreciate that and respect it,” Manchin said. “When you like both people and both sides, you can sit down with both sides, you can agree to disagree, you can try to find compromise and make things happen.”

Fetterman, who once described himself as a progressive Democrat, renounced the label in 2023, saying he “would just call myself a Democrat.”

Fetterman has broken from his party on several high-profile issues, including border security and his support for Israel and the war in Iran. He has also criticized his fellow Democrats, accusing the party of “catering to the fringe and agitated parts of our base” in an op-ed published in the Washington Post.

Fetterman might as well leave the Party now, because most of them have turned against him politically.
They would be certain to sabotage any future efforts at re-election or the implementation of any policies seen as favorable or fair to Israel.

I’ve always saw “independents” as being embarrassed DemonRATS. They hate to admit it but they don’t have to tell their friends that they voted for a bunch of sissified, far left bozos.

I personally like admitting I voted for President Trump than the braindead, Woke Salad Kammie.

By 'setting himself free', he would set the Dems free from such an inconvenient truth teller. Fetterman is the xray that shows what's inside the Dems (alleged) hearts.

Manchin fools nobody, he is, and was a Dem.

And Dems fool nobody. They are, and always were, farther left than they pretend.

No doubt they have, but the joke's on them. After attempting the "big tent" BS they'll realize they must now spout the socialist line to survive, and probably believe that will save them.

But they will be shoved out and replaced with authentic DSA trash.

Yeah, Manchin is the one to listen too ;)

I think overall he does more positive political good as a Democrat.
He’s a gadfly that constantly reminds them of how far left they have drifted.
Helps some regular democrats get their political views tempered.

As an independent he will be more easily ignored by both parties.

Just my opinion, Fetterman is just looking for the opportune time to leave, maybe if AOC or Mamdani says something super-crazy and there is no push back Fetterman can then declare he is out for good

Manchin and Sinema. An unlikely pair that saved America. After the COVID Coup succeeded in 2020 the Junta plan was to make their putsch permanent. The next step was to erase the Filibuster. Those two unlikely saviors refused to goose-step in unison with the rest of their comrades . Americans have no idea how close we came to losing it all.

Dems used to kiss up to get money by selling out to factions.

In a casual mention on a news show someone said “but the Democrats are having a national fundraising issue.”

Does anyone have info on that? The latest socialist to win was outspent by a wide margin by the regular Dem but she won decisively. May not matter like it used to.

Harris raised way more money than Trump in 2024 and still lost.

$10k vs $3.2M is one thing; $571k vs. $1.2M is something else.

It looks like Democrat challengers are in good shape.

Republican challengers in CO-1, CO-2 and CO-6 have essentially nothing.
The R challenger in CO-7 had $53k but spent $52k in the primary.

D challengers in CO-3 and CO-8 have well over 6 digits.
D challengers in CO-4 and CO-5 have 7 digits.

Maybe the national party is doing poorly but it looks like individual Democrat candidates are doing quite well.

Absolutely true, but that hasn't stopped some FReepers from smearing Manchin on this thread. This country owes much to him and Sinema for standing firm. Had they not done so, this country would be far worse off today.

Former Sen. Manchin urges Fetterman to ‘set yourself free’ by becoming an independent.

According to data provided by Heritage Action for America, which tracks the voting records of members of Congress, Senator Fetterman holds a lifetime conservative voting score of 4% and a session score of 7% regarding alignment with the organization's conservative policy priorities.

Sanders is a "Independent" and he caucuses with the democrats. Independents in our government are by and large liberals.

Notice how they are no longer Senators? The RAT party will absolutely not tolerate dissent. Fetterman is probably next. Then again the Great Replacement that Biden brought in has started to remove some long time RATs who apparently are not evil enough.
