Healthcare fraud keeps fleecing taxpayers — with the latest costing a full $1 billion

Just when you think you’ve seen the most shocking case of health-care fraud at taxpayer expense, another comes along to jolt you yet again.

This time, it’s a massive Medicare scam run by an overseas mob — possibly linked to the Kremlin — that got away with $1 billion of federal money, a new federal indictment charges.

The scheme, which began during the Biden administration, had low-level foreign nationals fly to America and purchase more than 30 medical-supply companies, feds say.

They then used the stolen credentials of 7,000 physicians and more than 1 million Medicare recipients to submit a jaw-dropping $10.6 billion in fraudulent Medicare claims.

The crooks wound up netting nearly $1 billion in hard cash, which they then allegedly laundered through China, Israel, Pakistan, Singapore and Turkey.

Authorities nabbed some of the mob’s foot soldiers, but it’s not clear who actually ran the operation — and got the money. Yet experts believe top officials in Russia must have been tied to it.

How is it possible that bureaucrats sent out such massive sums with such apparently little scrutiny?

Especially after Medicare recipients who saw the fraudulent billing — for catheters, for example, they never received — reported what they saw?

And this comes on the heels of a report Saturday from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services boss Mehmet Oz that a 1 million Obamacare enrollees lack Social Security numbers, and yet none of the paper-pushers who police the program had said boo.

The problem is not the crooks so much as it is the enablers. The bureaucrats who administer these programs are either incompetent, complacent, or both, and should suffer the consequences.

Corruption follows money as night follows day, and the largest river of money on this planet flows through Washington, DC.

I suspect that most of the bureaucrats are almost as crooked as the elected officials. Some of it may be incompetence since they do hire on the basis of DEI.

It's government run.

Between Medicare and Medicaid (those two combined control nearly 40% of all health care spending) https://crr.bc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/IB_24-16_Figure-1-1024x1024.png, the VA (largest single health care system in US), special programs for various groups (HIV prevention as an example - babies being born to uninsured), state programs... Most the money spent in the US today on health care is controlled by the government.

American health care is a private store front.

But you have government in the background controlling who gets what through a “standard of care” (mostly defined by the FDA, CDC/NIH, DEA)

It has become a socialized health care system (defined by a “standard of care”) at the maximum price the market can bear: private hospitals, doctors, pharma, medical device manufacturers and insurance all still trying to make as much as possible.

Since you have “cost controls” the focus on American health care has become volume of sales.

You get told how much you can make for any given procedure, but you can pump those patients through as fast as possible, often sacrificing quality of care.

Anything government manages is riddled with fraud, waste and abuse, and so is the case with our modern American health care system which essentially was taken over by government.

Government is a political beast. They make their decisions based on political considerations NOT ROI, proper risk analysis... When you expect the greatest ROI and proper risk management, but have politics truly driving the decision making, that will always create what people see as fraud, waste and abuse. Is it fair that a woman cannot get HRT paid for when suffering from menopause, but a homosexual can get these same hormones in huge doses as part of their bodies mutilation? Someone else, other than the patient is deciding what that money gets spent on.

Since government doesn't actually produce anything, all they do is administer / ration, so is the case with our modern American health care. Costs are primarily controlled by rationing off who gets what, like in every other socialized health care system.

You're actually starting to see a pretty sad trend, medical tourism where Americans are LEAVING the US to go elsewhere to get cheaper or BETTER health care. The US (40 year ago) used to be where people from around the world travel to.

I"m guessing democrats and their butt boys in academe and 'the press' chose not to see the fraud the same way they chose NOT to see 5 years olds trafficked/dropped from walls for sex and torture 'fun' for the sexual weirdo community'. What democrats benefited...

How many of the democrats working in these Medicare offices benefit? How many of these Medicare workers ARE democrats? Is that why they ignored the fraud?

Are these the same creeps pushing for 'Medicare for all'? More fraud money for their donors? More scams less care?
