Keir Starmer has said the UK will be prepared for war with Russia as he unveiled a £15billion military spending boost for the next four years.
Defence chiefs are racing to arm-up in readiness to defend against Russian attack, with new land, sea and air drones, stealth fighter-bomber jets and surveillance craft, a troop recruitment drive and deep-strike missiles.
But the long-awaited Defence Investment Plan (Dip) leaves a headache for Prime Minister-in-waiting Andy Burnham as the small print revealed £4.7bn - almost a third of the cash - will need to be funded in the Budget. It is understood that Mr Burnham was not told about the black hole when he was briefed on the plans, which experts said could force him to consider tax rises, more borrowing or spending cuts.
And former Defence Secretary John Healey warned it fell short of what was needed to see off the threat from Vladimir Putin. He said Britain will “still be spending just 2.7 per cent of GDP in 2030, the date when Nato has warned we could face a Russian attack”.
Documents confirmed that £298bn will be invested in defence over the next four years to "move the UK towards war-fighting readiness, modernising military capability to fight the wars of the future and drive economic growth".
Under the plans, the UK nuclear deterrent gets £47bn, including £13bn for warheads, £1.7bn for nuclear fuels and £290million for specialist training on our nuclear submarines. Hundreds of millions of pounds will be pumped into ‘robot warfare,’ forming new squadrons and fleets of unmanned drones to support army and air force fighters and helicopters and warships.

Anyone here think Russia will strike the UK?? Not I!!
Oh geeze. Is this their way of offsetting losing NATO?
Jump ahead about 70 years. Look around
What dolts!
“Wag the dog”
> Keir Starmer has said the UK will be prepared for war with Russia <
This is yet another attempt by Labour to distract the country from who the real invaders are.
Indeed. Russia is the least of the UK’s problems.
They know Russia’s getting desperate in Ukraine. The final act of desperation would be to start or expand the current war. Reagan got the Soviets to chill out. It’s an ounce of prevention.
Who the hell would want it? Nothing but muzzards, ponces, and bad food.
10 bucks says that each of those budget items will be siphoned off on things like paying pensions for former military members. Not saying military doesn't deserve pensions and such. Just saying it doesn't meet UK's military needs for the present.
1066-2026
Only 40 years left to finish off the natives.
Prediction: The supposed boost will be whittled down by half.
So let me get this straight. Your theory is that if/when the russians start losing even more men and equipment in the war with the yooks, they'll pick a fight with yet another country? In order for the russians to....?
Here’s a boat crossing Channel and heading for the UK.
I’m not an expert. But I don’t think these are Russian commandos.
“bad food”
That’s for the American tourists [ungrateful former subjects] and to be served by waiters and waitresses trained by communists.
Just who are they going to recruit that would defend present-day England?
Amelia?
I hope some of that 15 Billion goes to keeping Britain’s 2 functional MBTs working.
They should be taking measures to protect their country from illegal aliens who are arriving by boatloads into the UK. If an attack comes, it won’t be by the Russians. It’ll be an attack from within.
Maybe not against the homeland, but I could easily see Russia taking military action against future British attempts to interdict their commercial shipping.
