Trump orders gas stations to slash prices 'immediately' as he fumes over 'totally illegal' gouging - and warns of 'big problems' ahead if retailers refuse

President Donald Trump demanded gas stations slash prices 'immediately' on Monday and urged retailers to start targeting gasoline at around $2.50 a gallon, warning there would be 'big problems' if they failed to act.

In a fiery Truth Social post, the president insisted fuel prices no longer reflected falling crude oil costs and accused retailers of overcharging motorists despite oil dropping to around $68 a barrel.

'Gasoline Retailers must get their Prices down, IMMEDIATELY!' Trump wrote.

'They're too high considering that Oil is now at $68 a Barrel, and heading south. The Retailers must quickly react to this statement, and do what they know is right — DROP YOUR PRICE FOR OUR GREAT AMERICAN PEOPLE!'

Trump then warned retailers not to profit from falling oil prices at the expense of consumers.

'There will be no gauging [sic], which is totally illegal. If Retailers don't do this, big problems lie ahead!' he wrote.

The president made a direct plea for retailers to 'Start targeting around the $2.50 a Gallon number,' before turning his attention to California's fuel taxes.

The swipe marked Trump's latest attack on fuel prices as he increases pressure on the energy industry to pass on lower crude oil costs to drivers filling up at the pump.

Just last week, Trump revealed he had instructed the Department of Justice to investigate whether major oil companies were keeping gasoline prices artificially high despite a decline in crude prices.

At the time, the president accused the industry of 'gouging' motorists by failing to reduce prices quickly enough after oil markets eased.

Oil prices surged earlier this year after the United States and Israel carried out strikes on Iran, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Israel and Gulf states hosting American military bases.

Reminds me of Nixon’s attempts at wage & price controls.

Big Oil gouging the customers. Have to maintain those high profits. Remember reading in the 90s when prices were skyrocketing that a CEO of a major oil company (can’t remember which one) said publicly that they couldn’t afford displeasing their stockholders by lowering the price of gas.

Yep. But Trump didn't propose something like this until just now.

Trump should be on the lookout for price-fixing. That’s illegal. Otherwise, let the free market do it’s thing.

I get that Trump is (probably) just trying to score a few points with the public. But interfering with the free market is commie stuff. Come on, Donald. You surely know that.

That is pretty aggressive. Not sure the high priced oil is through the pipeline yet.

We need to re-issue “WIN” buttons.

I remember Ayn Rand appearing on Phil Donahue's show around 1980. Donahue asked Rand for her solution as to high gas prices charged by oil companies.

Rand replied, "You should pay their price and say thank you."

That drew gasps from the audience. Donahue was shocked. I suppose he expected some conservative lecture about the superior benefits of the free market, but instead Rand was very in-your-face unapologetic.

“We need to re-issue “WIN” buttons.”

We’ll find them in a crate in the same warehouse as the lost ark of the covenant.

As a real estate developer in NYC and New Jersey, Trump has long partnered with governments and unions, negotiating tax breaks, zoning, eminent domain, with an awareness of tariffs.

I doubt Trump has much knowledge of free market theory. His is a practical "this is how the system works" outlook.

I still have a WIN necktie I bought in 1975. Blue with a pattern of little red "buttons" that say WIN in white letters.

Haven't worn it in decades.

If I did wear it, I wonder how many people would get the reference?

Trump has repeatedly reminded us that he “graduated at the top of the class” at the Wharton School of Business. If he didn’t learn economic theory, he wasted his time.

Nope. The Patel Mafia is dragging their feet on lowering prices in line with refiners. Trump is smart to use the bully pulpit in this way.
