The Home Office has vowed to introduce new "capped safe and legal" routes for refugees to come to the UK from later this year.
The department said it would allow organisations like universities, community groups and businesses to sponsor refugees who applied to come to the UK, a model based on Canada's asylum system.
The government also said it would press ahead with changes to how human rights and modern slavery laws are applied to asylum applications to root out what it described as "vexatious" claims.
The Conservatives said no extra people should be let into the country until illegal immigration was stopped while Reform UK said it would reverse the scheme if elected to government.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the new system would protect "genuine refugees" while "closing loopholes that have been too often abused".
"Britain has always offered sanctuary to those fleeing war and persecution," she said.
"But this system only survives if the public trusts that it is fair, controlled, and not open to abuse."
Mahmood is attempting to shore up support for her immigration bill before Andy Burnham's expected rise to prime minister. It is set to be put before the Commons next week and its more hardline elements could be opposed by some Labour MPs.

As the article noted, the British Home Secretary is Shabana Mahmood. Mahmood is in charge of immigration. And she describes herself as a devout Muslim.

It is reported that Labour plan to import thousands of refugees into Britain through ‘safe and legal routes’.
I want to be really clear.
A Restore Britain Government will remove every single one.
Anyone who arrives under these new routes will be deported.
We will reverse the damage of this scheme. All of it.
And we will aim to prosecute those officials and politicians who knowingly place dangerous unvetted men in our communities.
It is treasonous behaviour, and will be treated as such.
And that will just be the start. Anyone who arrived illegally or lived illegally and then went on to claim asylum? Deported. Whatever current status they have will not protect them.
Restore Britain will end it all.

Should be sponsored by individuals but that can be abused also by being a pass through of the institutuional money.
Don’t know how you identify the poetential good ones.
The catch and release thing might be a useful tool. If you have been here and not been in any trouble, not on welfare, they might be the good candidates.

Restore Britain has got it right. They and Reform UK had better get on the same page, and form a solid alliance. Otherwise they will just split the opposition vote, and Labour will sail to another victory.
That victory will be it. It will finish off Britain.
The next UK general probably won’t be until 2029, although Labour can call an earlier election if they sense weakness and division in the opposition.
Maybe we can give special citizenship to all the UK citizens here at the world cup and say they are fleeing persecution.

Except they're not. Also, it's different when people arrive in ones and twos than when they arrive by the tens of thousands. They're not coming to escape some war; they're coming for the free goodies paid for by UK taxpayers.
‘NO’ in a word we don’t hear enough. Instead we talk endlessly to avoid stopping things that need to simply be stopped.
Reform’s leadership is akin to our GOP’s.
If the UK’s citizenry wants a country left to argue about, they’d better all united behind Restore.

I’m a voting-life long registered Dem who stopped voting that way after 1998.
Until President Trump came along, I voted against, never for.
Since 2016 I vote for MAGA.
