Supreme Court ruling blocks thousands of lawsuits against maker of Roundup weedkiller

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court sided with the maker of Roundup weedkiller Thursday in a ruling expected to block thousands of lawsuits alleging it failed to warn people the product could cause cancer.

The case came before the justices after a tidal wave of litigation that included some multibillion-dollar verdicts against Bayer, a Germany-based agrochemical manufacturer that acquired Roundup when it bought its original producer Monsanto in 2018.

The decision is a victory for President Donald Trump’s administration, but it provoked outrage from allies in the “ Make America Healthy Again” movement who want to rein in pesticide use.

The high court, in a 7-2 ruling, found that Roundup cannot face failure-to-warn lawsuits in state courts because federal regulations have found a cancer link unlikely and do not require a warning label. Though focused on Roundup, the ruling could affect similar health claims against other pesticide products.

This is an interesting one (beyond the impulsive outrage one might feel), because the SCOTUS is essentially putting the onus on the federal regulators: "The federal government did not require a warning label, therefore 'failure-to-warn' lawsuits have no standing."

I don't know if this outright rules out the possibility of suing for injury based on tangible evidence otherwise.

I think the ruling is wonderful and just right.

Basically, it is acid. The alternative is a mixture of diesel and salt.

you look at one data point of a complicated system and make a judgement.

You are heavily manipulated by the media.

poisonous stuff

That's rather the point of an herbicide.

I have learned, over the years, that FR is a lousy source of health or nutrition information.

There’s still fierce debate about cancer and Roundup’s key ingredient, glyphosate. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer classified the chemical as “probably carcinogenic” in 2015. The Environmental Protection Agency has determined that it’s not likely to cause cancer in humans when used as directed.

When political lines are crossed, you know it’s probably going to be something that upsets everyone for legally sound and valid reasons.

The two judges dissenting were Neil Gorsuch and Ketanji Jackson (which means we have Kavanaugh, Thomas, Barrett, Alito, Roberts, Kagan, and Sotomayor on the majority).

Killing it by giving the weeds cancer instead.

I buy acid in a 40% concentrated liquid form.
It is great for killing weeds and other plants.
I use it mainly for keeping my 50 year old brick patio clear.

Almost all people have the exact same thing in their kitchen cupboard. Although, it is not nearly as concentrated. The kitchen product is typically 5% acid, 95% water.

It is called VINEGAR.
