Thanks for this calming thread on Friday.

My father passed away almost 30 years ago.

Major Paul H. VanShuyten was a grunt engineer in the South Pacific in WWII, keeping the military bases and nickel mines in New Caledonia working. “McHale’s Navy” had nothing on those guys from the stories he told, although he preferred the Kanaks to the French. They were prepping for the invasion of Japan when Pres. Truman likely saved his life.

After the War, he was demobbed in California, where he was born and my mom had been employed making P-38 Lightnings, but got an offer to go to OCS, so he took it. He succeeded, and because he could speak some German, he was sent as an occupation officer to help rebuild Germany. That had lots of other stories.

After that, he bounced around, learning rail engineering, refinery engineering, etc, eventually teaching others at other posts and his retirement post at a university’s ROTC program.

A good man who helped raise four kids who never spent a day in jail.

(well, except for that one time a very nice deputy let me sleep in the drunk tank during a bad storm while I was hitch hiking. He even took me there, and dropped me off outside of town the next day.)

God bless you and your father. He sounds like a great man. I’m so glad that you have chosen us as your safe space. We love and honor families and our troops, past, present and future.

My daddy died 56 years ago at the very young [by today’s standards] of 61. His was a sudden death and I never got to say goodbye.
