Million migrants expected to sign up for Spain’s amnesty

Spain's migrant amnesty is set to attract more than one million people, which is double the expected number of undocumented workers seeking legal residency rights.

The migration ministry said it had received about 900,000 applications. The government initially thought only half a million illegal migrants would claim.

CEAR, a non-profit refugee aid organisation, said it expected applications to exceed one million by the time the programme ended in two weeks.

The amnesty was championed by Pedro Sánchez, Spain's centre-Left leader, who argued that integrating paperless migrants was just and made economic sense.

Spain's economic growth has far outpaced most European peers in the ‌past two ‌years, partly driven by migrants who have boosted key sectors such as hospitality and elderly care by plugging labour shortages and increasing social security contributions.

Mr Sanchez argued that the amnesty would continue Spain's strong economic growth and help safeguard public pensions by regularising their employment.

Yeah, Hungary and Poland, they are looking at you.

He announced it as “less than 500,000.” El Pais immediately claimed it would be over 900,000 and Sanchez called them liars.

Wait a minute. Doesn’t Spain have a separatist movement. Will this bring the nation together? They’re certainly not with us.

And this affects far beyond Spain. Granted amnesty and standing in Spain they are free to move about the EU.

Will these migrants be given stabbing knives, or do they have to provide their own?
