Russia is jamming GPS from space
Space News ^ | Dana Goward

Posted on 06/15/2026 7:34:11 AM PDT by delta7

“America is at risk of high impact GPS jamming and spoofing from space” was the title of my SpaceNews opinion article in October 2024. Little did I know that its publication would set into motion a series of events that ended up proving Russia has been jamming GPS from space since 2019…..

Russian technology is gaining in many sectors, outperforming the West in some. A symposium I attended years back addressed the fact our entire financial system uses GPS for time stamps. Without getting technical, loss of timestamps down to milliseconds shuts down many financial transactions.

If Russia invested half as much in real production as opposed to mischief, it would be a much richer county.

Russians have a knack for a waste of talent.

You don’t understand technology or how countries operate.

Jamming GPS means you can make your enemies’ tank columns go off into a swamp. Or, missiles. This is a military necessity, and if the US does not have it already we need executions at the Pentagon.

Being ABLE to do something is like having loads of ICBMs. Don’t wanna use them but if you lack the capability your enemy will destroy you in the middle of the night.

You don’t understand technology or how countries operate.

Nonsense.

Jamming GPS means you can make your enemies’ tank columns go off into a swamp.

Swamps are flat after all. In steep terrain, GPS has its limitations in accuracy. I'm fully aware of the implications and the limitations of GPS.

This is a military necessity, and if the US does not have it already we need executions at the Pentagon.

We do have very good inertial navigation technology. I don't know to what degree it has been abandoned.

I wonder how Starlink could be used to precisely identify geographic coordinates?

Seems to me it wouldn’t take much computing to know signal strength and position of each Starlink satellite and map out where in the world you are. You wouldn’t even need to download data except for the telemetry signal showing positioning.

Currently there are 9,800 Starlink satellites in orbit providing access. Elon plans on 25,000.

Good point! Iran too, which invests almost all of its money into evil deeds.

Don’t forget chess.

The presumption underlying such an emphasis upon military capability is that there is no preferable way to generate prosperity. Yet that latter investment is what generates the wealth and productive capacity to conduct military operations. So what I'm saying is that Russia's outsized expense of its talented engineering capabilities on weapons has always been a self-destructive obsession.

Oh, I know. I was just being flip. I brought up chess, because it is harmless and even noble, yet non-productive.

GPS satellites actually experience time dilation, a few microseconds, due to high speed and distance.

Eventually if some really smart person could increase that number with faster moving satellites and then deploy and utilize an onboard quantum computer entangled with one say at the Pentagon, they could then ‘see’ into the future. Just a thought, I wouldn’t try to sell it to Elon yet.
