Rikers Island captain charged with extortion, accused of forcing guards to pay her, drive her around
NY Daily News ^ | June 11, 2026 | John Annese

A Rikers Island Correction captain has been arrested for forcing her subordinates to pay her, buy her gifts and drive her to restaurants and a casino while on duty, according to federal prosecutors.

Latanya Brown, 51 — who was known as the “Terror of the Tombs” back when she worked at the Manhattan Detention Complex — sunk to criminal lows when she was transferred to Rikers Island in early 2024, according to a federal extortion and wage theft indictment unsealed in Brooklyn Thursday.

Brown was assigned to the jail complex’s Facility Operations Department as a supervisor from July 2024 to November 2025. According to the indictment, she acted as a tyrant — threatening to mess with two of her subordinates’ shifts and vacation requests, and deny overtime if she didn’t get what she wanted.

What she wanted, the feds allege, was money, luxury goods and personal chauffeurs.

She demanded cash, paid over the Zelle app, a Louis Vuitton bag, and rides to restaurants, bars, personal appointments and a casino, the feds allege. And the two Department of Correction officers under her command complied, fearing what she would do if they said no, according to the indictment.

“She demanded cash, paid over the Zelle app,”

cash < > Zelle payment

A Zelle payment leaves a nice electronic record. Cash does not.

She clearly didn’t take to heart Charles Barkley’s famous advice to Jussie Smollett on Inside the NBA, which is in the top 10 for best 3 minutes of TV in the last 10 years.

I saw several managers in the corporate world who treated, or tried to treat, their employees as personal servants. My conclusion was that when they were young employees, they were treated that way and complied. That early experience set their expectations. I remember the outrage one manager had when he was disciplined for ordering his corporate direct reports to help him paint his house. He couldn’t believe it. My other observation is that they were dumb as wooden posts and failed to observe how the world around them worked.

We have created a grifting class. Karmelo Anthony’s parents are the latest example. Somali immigrants are another.

It seems so many on the left have no issues defrauding, stealing, and using their positions in an entitled manners.

Here is a woman making guards drive her around. If a man asks a female co-worker to bring him a coffee, it is sexual harassment in the workplace.

Civil Rights Act, quotas and kissing ass because they are black has proved one thing for sure and it was not the intended outcome.

It might have been expectations based on their personal past but it's also a sign of a pathology.

They really can't fathom that there's something wrong with it. It's not like "Oops, yeah, I got caught." It's truly, "What do you mean there's something wrong with that?"

Seems like a trickle-down effect of amoral internationalism — its natural flipside. (Been reading about Kissinger and David Rockefeller.)

I had a couple of management whack jobs at my last company.

One was a two faced Bernie bot who was a super software developer and database guru who was there long before I started.

The other was a village idiot who was the world wide service desk manager who had 0 technical knowledge. He admitted it. His idea was to have a perfect order collective of people who never questioned anything. He apparently turned other big companies departments around. Think of him as the British pointy haired boss.

It’s taken three people to replace me and very little works since only one guy does most everything while the other two take up space. One is a nepo hire so untouchable.

It’s been give or take about two years exactly from the day I walked out and both have been fired. No sympathy.

Oh, this has nothing to do with being black. There are plenty of white guards and prison officials who are thoroughly corrupt. It comes with the job. I am aware of plenty of guards in rural prisons that are 100% white where a huge chunk of many of the guards’ income is smuggling contraband into the prison. Unfortunately, no one cares and no politician is willing to make an issue out of it. And then there is the legal corruption of charging prisoners 3 or 4 times the cost of phone calls and snacks to enrich concession companies with ties to politicians.
