U.S. President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of purchasing the strategically important Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean directly from Mauritius.
This scenario has gained momentum due to delays in the UK’s plans to transfer sovereignty over these islands.
The new U.S. administration seeks to gain full control over the archipelago to secure its military positions in the region.
Washington’s main goal is to preserve and protect the strategic Diego Garcia military base, which is currently jointly used by the U.S. and the UK.
To finalize the deal, the islands must first officially gain sovereign status under Mauritian control. Only then will the White House be able to begin direct negotiations on the purchase, bypassing official London.
Previously, the British plan to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius was put on hold because the U.S. withdrew its support for the initiative.
The idea of purchasing the archipelago was proposed by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who has already submitted a corresponding proposal to the U.S. president.
However, sources note that this option is not currently the primary one and is being considered as one of several possible scenarios.
Some officials in Washington have expressed serious concerns that transferring control to Mauritius would pose a threat due to that country’s close ties with China.
The U.S. side sees this as a potential risk of espionage near secret military facilities.

This site has gotten slow today.
Who will be the first to stop him- Congress or a federal judge?
Must be nice to have that kind of pocket change lying around.
Imagine how expensive not having it could be?
Buy it. just take it over.
That’s the difference in people like Trump and...pretty much everyone else. Who else would have even thought of this?
The British have owned these for a long time now and they were NEVER part of Mauritius. They even issued stamps as BIOT (British Indian Ocean Territory).
Considering that the UK was literally going to pay Mauritius tens of millions to take them, how much could they be?
Imagine how expensive not having it could be?

Ok I’ll bite. What would be the final bill for NOT having it?
Why money when Trump can trade Puerto Rico and a player to be named later, perhaps Washington DC, for the Chagos Islands and kill two birds with one stone? No 4 new senators for the Democrats by trading away their planned 51st and 52nd states and we get an island garage to park our B2s, B52s and other long range bombers along with other military hardware as a jumping off point
It’s a mistake to recognize Mauritius sovereignty over the islands. They never had anything to do with them. The islanders are all UK citizens - living in the UK.
Since Starmer is determined to give them away, we should just annex them. Mauritius is making deals with CCP. They must never be allowed any control over them ever.
It’s not like the brits can send a navy there to defend them !
The Brits don’t have any use for the islands anymore as they have no functioning military planes or ships...
We used to know how to do this in the old days.
Diego Garcia??? I wanna know who ordered a Code Red.
Excellent. Now for Greenland.
