Amid ongoing scrutiny over the U.S. war with Iran, President Donald Trump on Sunday defended his foreign policy stance — and denied that he ever campaigned on the promise of “no new wars.”
In a wide-ranging interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker that aired on Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” Trump said he built a “tremendous military.”
“First of all, I didn’t guarantee no war. Why would I have built the strongest military in the world?” Trump said. “I built our military. I inherited a terrible military. We had no equipment. We had nothing. I built a tremendous military. When you say I promised, I didn’t promise anything.”
Trump said he doesn’t like “endless wars” but added that the current conflict with Iran “is not an endless war,” asserting that the Vietnam War lasted for 19 years “because of stupid people.”
“We’re there for a few months and the threat is largely over,” Trump said. “Soon, it will be over. But you cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon, or they will blow you up. There will be no Kristen. There will be no NBC. There will be no ‘Meet the Press.’”
Throughout his campaigns for president, Trump has repeatedly criticized the U.S.’s involvement in lengthy military action in Middle Eastern countries, including lambasting former President George W. Bush for the war in Iraq during a 2016 GOP debate.
While campaigning in Pennsylvania in 2024, Trump told rallygoers: “I will not send you to fight and die in stupid foreign wars that never end.” He reiterated the promise in his 2024 victory speech, stating at the time: “I’m not going to start a war. I’m going to stop wars.”

Politico tries so hard. So does Kristen Welker. But Iran cannot have nukes. Thanks Obama
Is it a war? Is it a skirmish?
Trump cannot control how other countries behave. If there is to be a war then it should be fought to win. No endless wars like the democRATs and RINOs fight.
Not a war.
Too bad for the Trump haters people are actually ok with Trum putting Iran in its proper place. And without nukes
It is a *forever war*?
Inquiring minds want to know...
Promises are not a good idea. When GHW Bush emerged from a private meeting with Dems the Dems promised him they would back him up about tax policy and he could promise “No new taxes.” The Dems deliberately lied to Bush and undercut him, saying he argued for the new taxes while they tried to hinder him. “No new taxes” because a grim joke and an albatross around his neck.
OK So it depends on your definition
While not a ground invasion the consequences are similar and felt
Isn’t Iran an old war?
I don’t see it as being a new one.
But is it a *forever war*?
It’s difficult to know unless in hindsight
But it was supposed to last 60 days and here we are
Hahaha. Suckers.
Well, no, actually, when the cease fire was announced the *cease fire* was supposed to last 60 days. We are reaching the 60 day mark as we speak. I believe when we reach the end, short of an agreement, there will be a resumption of bombing, then it will end.
So let’s make sure we keep our terms straight. That cease fire announcement came after about 6 weeks of bombing. So we’re at about 100 days. If it get close to a single year, get back to me...
So, and to be clear, the best answer you can give is that, no, at this time, it’s not a forever war. So Trump *hasn’t* gone back on his word, despite the fact that this is what you are trying to assert.
Right?
“ While not a ground invasion the consequences are similar and felt”
Similar to what?
“We must abandon the failed policy of nation building and regime change that Hillary Clinton pushed in Iraq, Libya, Egypt and Syria.” — Trump, July 21, 2016
“The current strategy of toppling regimes with no plan for what to do in the day after only produces power vacuums that are filled simply by terrorists.” (Trump, September 2016)
“Hillary Clinton is trigger-happy. She’s raced to invade, intervene and topple regimes. She believes in globalism, not Americanism.” (September 8, 2016)
We will stop racing to topple … foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn’t be involved with.” (Trump, December 2016)
“I’m not going to start wars, I’m going to stop wars,” declared Republican US presidential nominee Donald Trump in his victory speech (November 5, 2024).
“We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we never get into. My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and a unifier.” —Trump, January 20, 2025

Economic shock mostly I’m referring to as being ‘felt’.
I know it’s not a full scale ground invasion and occupation. Most of us can tell the difference
But there are still consequences....
And I thought you didn’t want this hanging over the mid-terms?
Politically speaking it’s not wise
Yeah - and Trump took intermediate steps, like bombing the centrifuge sites, months before finally committing to a bombing campaign. So, didn’t rush into a damned thing, right? And, nuclear weapon, right?
In fact, an Iranian official (still in power there, by the way) just did an interview and said they *still* intend to build dozens of DIRTY bombs with the 60% material they have even if they can’t get to an actual nuke.
So, which cities do you want to see hit with Iran’s dirty bombs? Name them. please. So I can hold them over your head if you people prevail and the bombs start dropping.
Meanwhile, go whine with Pence and RandFan.
“””””But it was supposed to last 60 days and here we are”””””
We?
You aren’t even American, quit working so hard against our president as you post from overseas and your Trump hating country.
