Golden Tempo wins the 158th running of the Belmont Stakes

Golden Tempo won the 158th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, capturing the third leg of the Triple Crown five weeks after winning the Kentucky Derby and making more history for trainer Cherie DeVaux.

With jockey Jose Ortiz aboard, Golden Tempo charged down the stretch at Saratoga Race Course to win the Belmont, holding off Commandment before the finish line at the historic track to win at odds of 6-1. Commandment was second and favorite Renegade third.

“Golden Tempo is amazing. Jose is amazing,” said DeVaux, who was born in Saratoga Springs and began her training career there. “I think he needed to do this to kind of show that he was meant to win the Derby and that he is a horse that belongs in that conversation of being one of the top 3-year-olds.”

DeVaux, after becoming the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner, is the second in four years to do so at the Belmont. Jena Antonucci won it with Arcangelo in 2023. DeVaux is the first woman to win multiple Triple Crown races.

The pace was not nearly as fast as it was at Churchill Downs, yet Golden Tempo still was able to close in time to win the 1 1/4-mile race in 2:03.49. It didn’t matter, as he was the best in the field of nine horses.

Thanks for posting. Great horse and jockey. 6-1 WOW! I would have made some money with $20 to W-P-S.

I wonder if the Golden Tempo team will regret not running in the Preakness.

I don't follow horse racing that much anymore but isn't the Belmont 1 1/2 miles?? I believe the author quoted the distance and time of the Derby, not the Belmont. Or I am just reading the article wrong..ha..

I noticed Fox commentators calling the horse “it” instead of he/him. He picked his pronouns or did someone do it for him?

The Belmont is usually 1 1/2 miles, but the race was run at Saratoga, so it was only 1 1/4. The race was also run at Saratoga the past two years because Belmont Park is getting a makeover. Belmont Park is scheduled to reopen in September, so next year’s race will be there and back to 1 1/2 miles.

They don’t really have to count the votes in California. We all know ahead of time what the “results” will be.

well...Belmont Park, where this race is usually run, has been under going renovation the last 3 years so they ran the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga race course these last 3 years. Because thay couldn’t configure Saratoga to 1 1/2 miles, they just ran it at 1 1/4 mile. You are right though. its always run at a mile and a half. The race is returning to the new “BELMONT PARK” next year, and back to 1 1/2 miles. The new place is spectacular, but they made the new grandstand MUCH smaller than the old one. The old one held over 100,000fans...the new one will hold about 60,000.

I had a couple Tempos in the 80s and 90s. Decent economical cars, but there’s no way a Tempo, golden or otherwise is winning a race.
