The first officer of a United Airlines jet warned the pilot "you are still slow and a little low" before the aircraft hit a light pole and tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike while landing at Newark Liberty Airport on May 3.
A preliminary report released Thursday by the National Transportation Safety Board about the May 3 incident said the airliner was hit by a 34 mph wind gust just before crossing the highway, and confirmed the jet struck both the light pole and the tractor-trailer.
The crew of United Flight 169 heard a thump and felt a jolt as the Boeing 767 landed on runway 29 at the airport, the report said.
New Jersey State Police said a tire and the underside of the plane struck a light pole and a tractor-trailer owned by Schmidt Bakery in Baltimore. The pole then hit a Jeep on the Turnpike near interchange 14.
Runway 29 runs perpendicular to the expressway, requiring aircraft to fly over the Turnpike at low altitude before landing. It is also Newark Liberty's shortest runway.
The flight from Venice, Italy, had 221 passengers and 10 crew members on board, United Airlines said. The plane taxied to the gate normally and no one on board was injured.

Truck was apparently hit by light pole, not plane directly.
Name the pilot !!
One item of note was that the pilot crossed the runway threshold at an altitudge of six feet instead of 50 feet as per the glide slope.
Women have poorer spatial awareness than men. Not a knock on women. Just how the brains are wired.
“...crossed the runway threshold at an altitudge of six feet instead of 50 feet as per the glide slope.”
That puts the First Officer’s warning “You’re a little low” in context, doesn’t it?
Was the pilot a woman or person of color?
Seems like pilot should be fired for hitting a light pole.
I can remember driving on the California hills outside of LA and being unable to tell by my body whether the car was going uphill or downhill. I have had that story pointed out to me by husband, who was in the car with me, for the last 55 years!
Wi Too Lo.
Sum Ting Wong.
“Was the pilot a woman or person of color?”
I don’t know but I would like to know. Just going by what their ceo said earlier.
Clearly a racist statement.
Gust or no gust... the pilot was STILL “too low and to too slow”...
