Jobs report smashes expectations with payroll growth of 172,000
Yahoo Finance ^ | June 5, 2026 | Emma Ockerman

The US economy added 172,000 jobs in May, blowing past expectations, according to the government's closely watched jobs report. The unemployment rate remained flat at 4.3%.

Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had anticipated payroll growth of 88,000 for the month.

April's jobs report — which itself was a massive beat — was also revised to show an even better 179,000 jobs gained, compared to the 115,000 reported earlier. March's payroll growth was similarly updated to show 214,000, bringing the first monthly gain above 200,000 since early 2024.

Payroll gains were seen across several sectors — notably not relying just on the healthcare industry, which has been the primary engine of job growth as of late. Leisure and hospitality added 70,000 jobs last month, while local governments grew payrolls by 55,000. Healthcare added about 35,000 positions.

The question will be how well-paying those roles are as higher prices sink their teeth into workers' wallets. Food services and drinking places, for example, added 48,000 jobs in May, and average hourly earnings for that industry are $21.86, according to government data.

That tracks with a Bank of America Institute analysis this week that showed payroll growth accelerated in May, though it "appears much of this strength is being driven by gains in lower-income jobs."

It's surprising that jobs growth has coincided with the war and rising oil prices.

How many went to H1B’s? They shouldn’t count.

April's jobs report . . . revised . . . 179,000 jobs gained, compared to the 115,000 reported earlier. March's payroll growth was similarly updated to show 214,000

Is it me, or does it seem like the jobs numbers are always first loudly reported as lower under Republicans, and the opposite under Democrats?

One in three American males age 25-54 are not employed or are not looking. Saw it in the WSJ yesterday-Jason Riley. The welfare system allows for it. Pull the rug out and watch all those illegals have to compete with the lazy home grown’s.

POTUS planted the seeds a year ago bringing Trillions of $ to U S in manufacturing, returning supply chain home, AI... and targeted tax cuts to encourage investment. it’s amazing what a difference it makes when we have a leader who is economically literate and brings on staff to implement growth policies.but this will make it hard for Fed Head Warsh to do anything on interest rates just now,i suspect.

Absolutely.

It's funny when things go well the “conservatives”’on this site find excuses to find fault. Typical. Guess losing to Trump still hurts.

In August when their grass is burned out they pray for rain. When it does finally rain they complain that its wet. 🤣 Trump 🇺🇸👍

Maybe the threat to cut SNAP if the recipients don’t look for employment works.

Before long, employers will have to hire native born jobless from the hood or living in their mothers basements, rather than illegals. Hope the former take advantage of this by acquiring work ethic and skills.

I was surprised that one of our local leftist news rags posted that as a positive thing. Maybe they think their readers are too stupid to connect positive economic news with our master businessman POTUS’ dealings.

Mostly hospital work. Gotta take care of the sick.

Other stuff pretty benign, and weak where dudes work at:

'Employment showed little change over the month in other major industries, including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, information, professional and business services, and other services."

Certain industries, e.g. construction, are hampered by high interest rates. Interest rates won’t decline until inflation goes down.

“It’s surprising that jobs growth has coincided with the war and rising oil prices.”

Booting out illegals, and those that have self-deported, has helped boost these numbers, I’m sure.

The White House says:

“Over 605,000 illegal immigrants have been deported since January 2025, with additional estimates suggesting that around 1.9 million self-deported during the same period.”

So I would expect employment numbers to keep going up. MAGA!
