As Republicans seek to highlight Democrat James Talarico’s record on transgender issues, immigration, and other progressive causes ahead of November’s U.S. Senate election, the lawmaker’s campaign is embracing one of the nicknames those positions have earned him.
The Talarico campaign recently began selling merchandise bearing the phrase “I’m a Talafreako,” a reference to a nickname used by Republican nominee Ken Paxton during his runoff victory speech.
“He goes by a few names that you may all have heard of,” Paxton told supporters. “Some people know him as Tofu Talarico, some people call him Six Gender Jimmy. I’ve even heard some people call him James Talafreako.”
Paxton then explained the reasoning behind the nickname, pointing to Talarico’s positions on immigration and transgender issues.
“He wants open borders, and even said a welcome mat should be at our southern border,” said Paxton. “He’s a threat to our children. He wants boys in girls’ sports, gender mutilation surgery performed on kids.”
Paxton also referenced a comment from Talarico in which the Democrat said “trans kids” were among the things he loved most outside his family and friends.
Now the campaign’s online store features apparel prominently displaying the nickname.
The move comes as Talarico seeks to build support statewide following years as a progressive Democrat in the Texas House.
Talarico has opposed legislation barring biological males from competing in women’s sports, criticized Republican efforts related to protecting minors from sex-rejecting medical interventions, and has been an outspoken advocate for transgender-identifying youth.
Those positions have become a central focus of Republican attacks as Paxton and other Republicans seek to portray Talarico as out of step with Texas voters despite recent efforts to present himself as a more moderate figure.
The decision echoes a similar episode from 2018, when the Texas Democrat Party briefly sold merchandise celebrating itself as the “pot-smoking lesbian coalition” after the phrase was used by Gov. Greg Abbott adviser Dave Carney to describe the party. The merchandise was quickly pulled.

There is no way that Talarico is going to be able to use the term "Talafreako" to his advantage since he is actually a freak. I do not think that his supporters will relish being considered part of a group of freaks.
Besides, the design of the T-shirts is unoriginal, boring and uninteresting.
Regardless of all this, Paxton shouldn’t be talking like this. He just needs to be pounding on his positions without calling him a “freak”, even though he is one.
“”””on transgender issues, immigration, and other progressive causes””””
“Progressive” probably sounds like a positive word showing them the proper voting choice, to the people who don’t pay attention to politics, or to much of anything, it sounds like the position of the smarter people who are informed on all the complicated stuff.
This should go over well in the Longhorn State.
How about Talafago, child porn expert.
Stay above the frey like Bush and Romney. How did that work out not getting your lilly white gloves dirty?
I thought it was Trannyfreako. They had a picture of Tranny and his buddy Beeto standing in front of a Texas flag on FOX yesterday. I’m still trying to find a copy. The two morons looked like some freaky Stan and Ollies. If we could get a pic of Davy Hoggboy with them they could be the new Tres Secuaces.
“on transgender issues, immigration, and other progressive causes”
...on transgender issues, illegal invaders, and other perverted causes...
I agree. Name calling right now is just a waste of time.
Americans are far less bothered by hearing certain kinds of nicknames now, vs 40 years ago, especially Gen y; People between 30 and 45 y/o. They were indoctrinated that way via most public schools.
Besides, Paxton has his own baggage on what some may consider ‘improper and amoral’ behavior. Focus on Talaricro’s policy presented and Paxton’s shared visions of the future vs Talaricro’s vision of the future.
Don’t be surprised if the race is close and less if he squeaks a win. Texas urban areas are bastions of liberalism, foreigners, and Yankees. It will take right leaning citizens to turn out.
How bout TalaPinko. It’s more suiting to the little commie bastard.
It is called a bluff. Trying to head off the tag by pretending to embrace it. Shove it down his throat until he cries.
Once the Paxton campaign is able to get the word out to Texans about Talarico’s past statements on transgenders and Christianity, the Talirico campaign will crash.
Being polite and not saying s*** when your opponent is throwing it at you is neocon nonsense that went out with GWB-and it got us 8 years of hell with Obama and 4 with FJB. Not any more-rub Talarico’s nose in all his liberal insanity right out in public, down and dirty-as Alice Cooper says-”No More Mr. Nice Guy”...
Isn’t that what you were saying about Cruz when he was trailing by 4% all through the election? Early polls are faked to help Dims fundraise.
I was thinking that same exact thing. He’s using the same tactic Trump did. Hopefully he doesn’t have the success Trump had.
Agree - cutesy sounding nicknames distract from how extreme and dangerous his views are and only play into his hands - like what we are seeking here. “I’m a Talafreako”
This guy could run for San Francisco mayor without changing any of his views - that’s how far left he is. And yet, he is presently the frontrunner to win a Senate seat in conservative Texas. And it has been done before - look at Kentucky and Andy Beshear.
I tried to pull the information from deep inside my mind as to which person he looks a little like. Finally came up with two: 1) Doc Watson, the blind folk and country star and 2) the creature in makeup in Young Frankenstein.

Why?
Most Texans are fine calling Demonrats Freaks.
Although I prefer to call them Demonrats.
Just tell the dummies Talarico is fond of Trump, he’s acting like him.
Use this as proof.
The rabid, drooling twats will scream and run away.
