What happens if South Carolina approves new congressional maps mid-election? (Today)

Early voting begins Tuesday in South Carolina, but some voters may be required to cast a second ballot if state lawmakers approve new congressional district maps currently under debate.

The South Carolina Senate fast-tracked the redistricting plan over the weekend and is expected to hold a final vote on Tuesday. Senators convened Saturday for a five-hour debate — their first weekend session in 40 years.

The proposed maps, which the House passed Thursday, would redraw all seven U.S. congressional districts in the state in response to a call from President Donald Trump to create Republican-leaning districts. Currently, only one district is solidly Democratic — the seat held by Rep. Jim Clyburn in the 6th District.

The biggest question: What happens to primary voters who have already mailed in their ballots? If new maps are approved, the South Carolina Election Commission would disregard congressional votes cast under the old district lines.

Under the proposed H. 5683, candidates for the seven new congressional districts would need to file between June 1 and June 5. Then, a separate primary would be held Aug. 18.

“...but some voters may be required to cast a second ballot...”

More possible ways to screw up the ballot whether intentional or not.

The proposed maps, ..in response to a call from President Donald Trump to create Republican-leaning districts.

Fake news, right there.

The biggest question: What happens to primary voters who have already mailed in their ballots?

Boo hoo, blame the uniparty for being too cute in their efforts to rig the elections.

Gots lots of time between now and election day to have yur rigged primary

I believe that the recent USSC decision invalidating the Virginia vote on new district maps has ruled that changes cannot be made while voting is going on.

Hopefully the USSC will end the scourge of “early voting” altogether.

SC State Senate RINO’s must approve the new Map or their careers will be over,
Just like the 5 Pence RINO’s in Indiana career’s are over.

That ruling was based upon Virginia's state law, by the Va. Supreme Court.

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected hearing the case, because the appeal was sent to the wrong court, if my memory is correct.

The Court rejected Virginia Democrats’ emergency application for a stay on May 15, 2026, in a brief, unsigned order with no public dissents.

The U.S. Supreme Court typically does not review state court interpretations of state constitutions, unless a federal question is involved. Virginia Democrats argued that the Virginia Supreme Court’s decision—invalidating the voter-approved redistricting amendment over procedural flaws—violated federal law, but the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene. The rejection left in place the 4–3 ruling by the Supreme Court of Virginia, which had struck down the amendment because the General Assembly failed to follow the state constitution’s requirement for an intervening election between legislative votes on constitutional amendments.

I know Linsey Lohan Graham disappoints but Lynch who is running against him is worse. He’s setting off all kinds of RINO red flags.

The state senator from my district, Tom Davis, opposes the map. Scrape away all of his specious objections and Davis is just anti Trump. He wants Clyburn voting for Trump’s impeachment and blocking the MAGA agenda. Davis is toast.

That is what I’ve heard across the board, a perfect example of why the 17th Amendment needs to get repealed. Been ranting about this since Carter was in office to anyone who would listen.

“The biggest question: What happens to primary voters who have already mailed in their ballots?”

No. The biggest questions are 1) why does SC have election SEASON rather than the common sense election DAY and 2) why does SC have mail voting at all (except in cases of true hardship, travel, and military service).

We all know the reason.

“Davis is toast.”

He’ll be in the toaster for another 2 years then.

Zero SC state senators are up for re-election in 2026, so those who obstruct won’t pay the price (if they ever do) until 2028.
