Why Trump’s possible Iran deal may be almost as divisive as his decision to wage war
Cnn.com ^ | May 25, 2026 | Stephen Collinson

The best hope for ending a poorly planned war, which started with scant consultation with Congress or the American people, may be an unsatisfactory peace that leaves critical issues to be resolved later and deepens Washington strife.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said a deal to halt the conflict he chose against Iran is imminent and very close. Each time, his predictions turned out to be wishful thinking or a misreading of Iran’s true intentions.

So it’s no surprise his latest claims that a framework agreement with Tehran is near have been met with skepticism and confusion — nor that both conservative hawks and Democrats seem to believe he’s on the cusp of caving to a bad deal.

(snip)

Any undertaking from Iran in the memorandum that it will not chase nuclear weapons would be greeted with great reservations in Washington. A proposed period of at least 60 days for negotiations to resolve remaining sticking points on Iran’s nuclear enrichment, including its uranium stockpile, also seems rather compressed given the complexity of the issues. History shows Iran would love to drag the United States into a prolonged period of inconclusive diplomacy that lasts months or years.

(snip)

Outlines of a proposed deal, meanwhile, fall far short of the “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER” that Trump demanded from Iran in March. But he’s under extreme pressure to find some resolution, with gas prices rising, his approval ratings tanking, and his support from congressional Republicans weakening on Iran and other issues.

Repeating:
If the U.S. is engaged in a shooting war with Iran and the price of gas is still high in November because the Strait of Hormuz is closed, Republics lose seats they would have otherwise won in Congress and elsewhere in the midterms. Trump needs to wind this down at least until after election day. He’s smarter than this.

CNN: TDS blinds them to the truth and pushes them to embrace delusions.

CBS reports Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is hiding in secret,
communicating thru a network of messengers to avoid assassination by Israel.

US intel says even senior Iranian officials cannot contact him directly,
causing major delays in US-Iran negotiations.

The regime’s underground communiques are described
as chaotic ........“almost like watching a sitcom.”

I could take the Strait with 3,000 brawny Marines. We would then be in a better position to get every one of our demands. And if they refuse, it’s back to the stone age for them.

I don’t know what Trump is doing here, and I no longer think he ever had a plan. This isn’t what he ran on, and it’s not what he does well.

I find it humorous that a CNN ‘reporter’ talks about a “poorly planned war” when his joke of a network has fewer viewers than you-tube. Journalism, when one failed at “studies”.

Douchebag Timber Rattler returns, posting CNN articles to boot.

I had not seen this thing posting for some time, but it is possible it had delegated itself to some backwater on FR where nobody saw it.

It was nice not seeing it pollute the well-traveled forums for some time it seems, but here we are.

The buzz is Israel’s out of the loop wrt “The Deal”
b/c military action (not negotiation) would give
Israel massive amounts of tax dollars earmarked for its “defense”.......
out of the $200 billion “additional war funding” Trump wants.

At least Trump got us out of that stupid Ukraine war

We were never in that war but Trump very nearly got us on the wrong side of it. He did hypocritically convert support done in our national interest into that of a war profiteer, while posturing as a humanitarian to the gullible.

What is "stupid" about the Ukraine war is not the resilience and intrepidity of a people wrongly invaded victims of a war crime, but the stupidity of Vladimir Putin for believing he could win in a matter of days.

What is far from stupid is the resourcefulness of the Ukrainian people and the steadfastness with which Europe has stood by Ukraine even as it was deserted by America.

“the price of gas is still high in November”

The Congress has the power to cap oil-related prices.

Effective June 15th, the price of any pre-pipeline crude oil from a particular domestic well shall not exceed its average January pricing by more than 30 cents per gallon.

Effective June 22nd, the price of any pipeline crude oil from any domestic pipeline point shall not exceed its average January pricing by more than 35 cents per gallon.

Effective June 29th, the price of any refinery input crude oil shall not exceed its average January pricing by more than 40 cents per gallon.

Effective July 7th, the price of any refinery product normally used for motor fuel shall not exceed its average January pricing by more than 55 cents per gallon.

The European allies did nothing to open the strait.

However all the nearby Muslim countries are arranging to help the US.

Right now Trump is keeping things quiet putting the pieces in place by negotiating.

One item missing from nearly every discussion in the MSM and the Chinese/democrat propaganda is the Hajj which is this week.

One to two million Muslims are attending the pilgrimage and most will fly in. That means airports open and food and supplies have to be brought in.

Iran has attacked this pilgrimage in the past. The fact that so far the pilgrims are safe is a tribute to Trumps Abraham accords and anti missile defense.

True Saudi does not have a nuke but Pakistan does. And Saudi not only has a lot of Pakistani workers but they just moved 20 thousand troops there to help.
