Britain and France have scuppered a proposal for Nato allies to spend 0.25 per cent of GDP on military aid for Ukraine.
Mark Rutte, the alliance’s secretary-general, this week conceded his plan wouldn’t be taken forward because it didn’t have sufficient support.
“I don’t think this one will be proposed,” he told reporters, without naming the opponents.
But now The Telegraph can reveal that the UK, France, Spain, Italy and Canada blocked the idea when it was floated in discussions for how to boost support for Kyiv.

I support Ukraine - you know that, but...
The 1st part of “we” must do something is “me”, as in I who am closest, most affected, etc. The very closest are generally already doing what they can. But why are France and the UK bailing out here? Without them first to step up further, the US will not be so inclined.
I think I know the answer, but it is the Euros who need to say it, not me. :-(
France is actually the only EU nation who has actively been militarly defending its middle Eastern allies in the region. They have shot down countless of Iranian drones and missiles.
France is the only EU nation having brought in a naval fleet in the region near Hormuz. The nuclear aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle has been in the region for more than a month already - including many other war ships and a nuclear French submarine with nuclear arms onboard.
Trump energetically refused EU help many times because he thought that winning over Iran alone would be a picnic (and great for his ego)... well it turned out to be the exact opposite. It’s impossible to win against Iran without a ground invasion and at least 400.000 troops. The “Complete and Unconditional Surrender” of Iran as the White House narrative was in the first week of the war is now evidently dead.
The only thing “we” the west can hope for now is a half baked negotiated solution where Iran unfortunately maintains some powerful cards.
It’s very sad.
Anyway, France is doing its part - defending its middle eastern partners, and thus honoring the signed defense contracts.
Really? No leader of any country ever tried to negotiate with Putin? Okay
Unfortunately, for Trump, with his refusal to aid Ukraine militarily, his all carrot and no stick negotiations have not worked, and will not work with Putin.

I presume you are irritated about the fact that France is the ONLY nation (besides America) of the planet having brought in a powerful naval nuclear fleet in the region near Hormuz. France has its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier there, at least one nuclear submarine, and many other war ships.
It has been shooting down Iranian drones and missiles in droves, as it defends its middle eastern allies against Iranian attacks.
Once your nerves have calmed down a bit and you feel you are able think again, then you will spend more time chastising our real enemies :
The Iran - Russia - North Korea - China Alliance. THEY are ones helping and financing and arming IRAN. Russia is the one who gave Iran the precise coordinates to attack American bases in the region. Therefore, THEY are a disgrace. I hope you agree on that?
France is a non country taken over by moslems. Day what now of the yellowjackets and still no action from gov? France stopped being a country a while ago, and it’s a joke for a good reason. We in Canada are headed down that road, but we’re not as far gone as that cesspool. I won’t even visit it. I’ll stick to Grandpa’s home turf in Hungary and hit Poland etc, places where men still know how to be men. France is a weak and full of males as soft as butter.
