Surging gas prices have hit American drivers hard — but some much harder than others.
For households in the bottom quarter of the income distribution — those earning roughly $40,000 a year or less — commuting fuel costs now consume an average of about 4 percent of their income, according to a Washington Post analysis.
For households in the top quarter, earning $100,000 or more, the same costs amount to less than 1 percent.
The gap has widened since March, as the U.S. war on Iran escalated and oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz stalled, with implications for global markets.
(snip)
As a result of the war, U.S. gas prices have increased more than 40 percent compared to a year ago, reaching a national average of $4.50 a gallon this month, up from $3.18 in May 2025.
President Donald Trump has floated options to reduce those prices, including suspending the federal fuel tax. But he also has dismissed the economic impact of the war on Americans, saying that his priority is to prevent Iran from accessing nuclear weapons. On Tuesday he said about gas prices: “This is peanuts.”

Still lower than under Biden.
FUWP. The point is do you want Iran to nuke us or have higher gas prices? Apparently, nukes win.
PERHAPS ALL THESE “SNOWFLAKES” WOULD PREFER RATIONING COUPONS....
No, they’re not lower.
I was in the Netherlands last Sunday unfortunately I had to stop and get gas. It worked out to be about 12 1/2 bucks a gallon.
Certainly not pining for Biden but I never paid more than $3/gal under Biden. I’m well off but >$4/gal isn’t “peanuts”. We aren’t Canada or Europe.
I want my A coupon!!
Actually his point will be lost on the populace as it will be viewed through the media as a let them eat cake moment. IMO we have become too soft as a nation. We molly coddle criminals and drug addicts, worry too much about our personal comforts, and have lost our moral compasses evidenced by the trans and porn industries.
I know I am old, octogenarian old, I lived through some of the hardships and vividly recall those pointed out to me by my parents and grandparents. Maybe some complaining of the gas prices might consider how much of that price is taxes for instance.
Try being fair instead of getting in the clown car with Julie and Federica. Biden shot up the gas prices intentionally. They are high now because Trump is actively trying to keep Iran from getting nukes. Big difference.
And it pales in comparison to other generations that have made far more difficult sacrifices.
That was Trump's point.
And of course you don't get it.
You've got TDS.
Boomers bragging about paying more for gas as a patriot duty. Meanwhile FR is far behind in the fundraiser.
I understand the shock at the pump, but the real pain is the cost of transporting goods to market, especially food. It’s worse for those products where weight is high relative to size (e.g., soft drinks). Still, we are fairly spoiled by low gas prices in the US compared to other countries in Europe and even Canada. Personally, I’d rather pay the higher price than worry that my kids and grandkids may face nuclear threats in the future.
For those who think this is a let them eat cake moment, you can pick up your IQ score shortly.
Much higher gasoline prices under Biden were a feature not a bug.
Trying to permanently make it too expensive to drive cars in order to force the sheeple to ride mass transit on the alter of green energy is good. Temporary rising oil prices to stop Iran from nuking the western world is bad.
“Why cheap oil is not an economic blessing” - Washington Post, January 2016
That was then. This is now. Orange Man Bad!
I’m still in.
