North Carolina House Republicans override Stein veto on education tax-break bill

The state House voted Wednesday to override one of the Democratic Gov. Josh Stein's vetoes from 2025, as Republican lawmakers gained enough support to push forward with one of about half a dozen veto overrides that have been unresolved for the past year.

The House voted to approve House Bill 87. It would conform state law to a new federal law, passed under Republican President Donald Trump, giving tax breaks to people who donate to educational scholarship programs.

Stein had vetoed the bill a year ago, but also said he wanted to opt into the program in a way that would benefit public schools, as well, citing concerns about cuts to federal education funding. Stein said at the time he wanted to wait until the federal Treasury Department approved rules governing it. It hasn't done that yet.

Stein didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Two other Democratic governors — Jared Polis of Colorado and Kathy Hochul of New York — have said they plan to opt in.

Supporters ahead of Wednesday's vote said it will help boost all types of school choice.

[snip]

Opponents said that doesn’t tell the whole story — claiming the intent is to slash government funding for public education, and that the tax breaks will be paid for by slashing education funding.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

If public schools would improve their product, then they wouldn't have to worry about competition.

....giving tax breaks to people who donate to educational scholarship programs.

I like the idea but why must there be a middleman? That's where the corruption germinate. Why not just give the tax breaks to the parents? Watch how many "Scholarship Fund Organizations" the Clinton Foundation and George Soros set up.

The same way that conservative Kansas ended up with that leftist witch they have for a governor.

Government schools have the perfect product already.

The job of government schools is to transform republican offspring into democrat voters. Democrats abort their babies, so they need a reliable highway of republican babies to keep their voting base up.

I wish it were different. But our guys don’t want to fight it.

BTW, in neighboring SC,

BREAKING: South Carolina Senate Committee just voted to ADVANCE a new proposed congressional map, potentially eliminating the last remaining Democrat district.

It now goes to the Senate floor for an official vote. The House has already approved the map.

And speaking of SC,

Today Nancy Mace files legislation to ban foreign-born elected officials and judges.
