Reform UK is under fire after a key party figure criticised Labour’s free breakfast clubs, saying it is “parents’ job” to start their kids' days right.
Linden Kemkaran, the leader of Reform’s flagship Kent Council Council, wrote on social media: “Sorry, call me old fashioned but I believe it’s the parents’ job to give their child the best possible start to the school day.”
Free breakfast clubs provide a minimum of 30 minutes of free childcare and a healthy breakfast before the school day. The Department for Education (DfE) says they save working parents up to £450 a year.
A Labour source said: "You'd think Nigel and co would back something that promotes work and responsibility, but they'd rather attack it than stand up for working families. Breakfast clubs give children the best start to the school day and help parents work more to support their families. Reform are making their position crystal clear - they don't mind if kids go hungry."
Labour also pointed there are 29 breakfast clubs in Kent, with more to come.

No one likes to hear the truth!
My wife is a teacher. That UK person speaks truth!!!!
Breakfast is a SCAM, created by Big Food (Kellogg’s, to be precise). Glad he’s calling it out, although I doubt he realizes it.
Here in Austin, every child in elementary school gets a free breakfast.
I am not sure if breakfast is a scam but when I used to eat breakfast, or lunch for that matter, it would make me sleepy. That’s why I only eat one meal a day-dinner.
It is a parent’s job to provide and prepare breakfast for his children. Otherwise, the child grows up not learning one of the basic fundamentals of becoming a parent. It’s no wonder so many young, unmarried women believe that it is govt’s job to feed and house their young.
Feed your own damn kids!
I rarely eat before noon.
Three Meals A Day is a scam.
Well breakfast is not a “scam” but this guy is right. The fact that the comment caused a “fury” shows the disintegration of the culture. A family breakfast used to be a common a wonderful thing.
It’s not just breakfast; in many school districts, the kids receive 3 free meals a day, including supper at free after school care. IMO, the cost of the meals should be deducted from the families food stamp allowance.
“A family breakfast used to be a common a wonderful thing.”
We had a great family breakfast ONE day a week. Weekdays I was left with a cold egg and cold grits. Jelly did help. NO microwave back then.
If my dad and I were going hunting we got to pack biscuits and sausages.
“Three Meals A Day is a scam.”
I really enjoy my breakfast and coffee each morning. Along with some good music.
Lunch is hit or miss. Dinner is the treat. This afternoon it got dark early with a big thunderstorm. Wife made Pho. Delicious.
I understand the sentiment but children should not suffer when their parents are slothful, uncaring, and very likely incapable of providing for the emotional and physical needs of their children. I figure too the amount of money the U.K. has poured into support for illegal migrants is a great deal more than the cost of providing breakfast for school kids.
All your kids are belong to government.
+1!
Which is why we have documents from the 1700s talking about breakfasts and what was served.
We have cook books with breakfast foods in them.
We have documents on what should be served to the people in the workhouses for breakfast.
That is all because Kellogg was a time traveler.
“A family breakfast used to be a common a wonderful thing.”
It can still be, you just have to get rid of Big Food and their carbs...and then be a functional family (assuming that’s still possible).
“That’s why I only eat one meal a day-dinner.”
Nice, and one meal is FAR HEALTHIER than multiple meals a day (and zero meals is even healthier, to a point).
“That is all because Kellogg was a time traveler.”
I guess I can be more specific, so breakfast is a SCAM when it comes to eating crap from Big Food, or just about anything with our even newer Designer-Wheat.
