Tommi Jo Mejer, 50, a mother facing felony charges after her son allegedly fatally injured an 81-year-old Vietnam veteran while illegally riding an e-motorcycle in Lake Forest made her first appearance in criminal court on Tuesday, May 12.
...
“Tommi Mejer is anguished over the terrible accident,” the defense attorneys said in the statement. “She sends her deepest condolences and sorrow over this tragedy. This has been tragic for everyone.”
...
Prosecutors allege that Mejer’s son crashed into Ashman while riding in the roadway at Toledo Way and Ridge Route Drive on April 16. Ashman was walking home from El Toro High School, where he worked as a substitute teacher. The 14-year-old allegedly fled the scene of the crash, according to law enforcement, but was identified by witnesses and later taken into custody.
Mejer had previously been warned about the dangers of her son riding the e-motorcycle, prosecutors said, and allegedly lied to law enforcement after the crash, reportedly claiming her family did not own an e-motorcycle or have access to one. District Attorney Todd Spitzer previously said that Mejer had “essentially handed her 14-year-old son a deadly weapon,” adding that “despite multiple warnings of the dangers, (Mejer) continued to let him (her son) illegally ride an e-motorcycle until he finally killed someone.”
The e-motorcycle Mejer’s son was allegedly riding — a 2025 Surron Ultra Bee — requires a motorcycle license, insurance, license plate and registration in order to be used on a public street, according to prosecutors. Otherwise, the e-motorcycle, which can reach speeds of up to 58 mph and go from 0 to 31 mph in 2.3 seconds, can only be used on private property or off-highway vehicle areas.
If convicted as charged, Mejer faces up to seven years and eight months in state prison.

It doesn't get much more disingenuous than that.
Orange County, California
Police don’t like it when you lie to them.
I seriously don’t have any sympathy for the mother. When I read the title of the article, I thought I might. I might have also been sympathetic to her if she didn’t lie to the police a number of times and even worse, the fact that she was warned not to have her son ride the bike, makes the situation even worse. If I were on the jury, with what is known in the article, I’d vote to convict her.
Yeah, I’ll bet she’s anguished. Now.
Story glosses over the fact that her son, wasn't just riding illegally, but doing wheelies in the street, which is considered reckless driving.
After striking the man, her son fled the scene instead of rendering aid, or calling for emergency services.
Then, when he was tracked down after being identified by witnesses and she was asked by authorities, she denied that they even owned an E-motorcycle.
Lock her up and throw away the key. Same for her scofflaw son.
The stupid, emotive slogans we say to protect ourselves from responsibility in today's society while different in the language used, are the same in kind, as I saw in communist societies I have lived in and visited.
Fake / saccharine sympathy are one category, while appeals to victimhood and social justice are others examples of another common category
E Bikes are insufficiently regulated.
I see 10 yr old kids riding the sidewalks at 30mph.
No kid under 16 and without a license should be on anything that’s powered.
And anyone riding a powered device on the sidewalk should be guilty of a misdemeanor, and a felony if they hit someone.
These e-bikes have become a public menace. They need to be licensed like motorcycles.

Almost $8K.
Hit and run ? I hope they roast in hell.
Do this in the ghettos too.
But its OK for them to lie to you!
She was warned, but she didn’t give a darn. And now an innocent man is dead.
The victim’s family should prevail in the civil suit sure to come. Million-dollar homes in the El Toro area ...
Which is ironic ... police are allowed, even encouraged, to lie to us.
“Tommi Jo Mejer, 50, a mother facing felony charges after her son allegedly fatally injured an 81-year-old Vietnam veteran while illegally riding an e-motorcycle in Lake Forest”. Coaching her son how to run over old men on a motorcycle?
“ Police don’t like it when you lie to them.”
And yet they are trained and trained and encouraged to lie to us.
Seems fair.

I agree with you both, but this was not an e-bike. It was an electric motorcycle, already regulated and a license, registration, and insurance are required by law. That being said, some kids can hack their e-bikes to exceed 30 MPH.
Although the article omits it, Ashman was walking in the roadway. Roadways are for vehicles. That’s is a mitigating factor for me.
