Russia Has Lost More Than 350,000 Soldiers, New Estimate Finds
The New York Times ^ | May 9, 2026 | Paul Stone

About 352,000 Russian soldiers had died in the war against Ukraine through the end of 2025, according to a new estimate, underscoring the high cost that President Vladimir V. Putin is willing to bear to pursue his battlefield aims.

The figure was released on Saturday — the day of Russia’s annual May 9 parade celebrating victory over Germany in World War II — by the exiled Russian media outlets Meduza and Mediazona.

The number raises the prospect that about half a million soldiers in total have died on the Russian and Ukrainian sides. In the more than four years since Mr. Putin unleashed his full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the war has become Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.

The new estimate of Russian dead extrapolates from a database of confirmed soldier deaths that Mediazona and the BBC Russian Service have been keeping, based in part on social media posts and Russian probate records. That database now includes nearly 218,000 confirmed names.

To come up with the estimate of 352,000 deaths, Mediazona and Meduza homed in on the excess male mortality rate for younger age groups that is apparent in Russian probate records. They also made inferences about Russian deaths confirmed by courts.

The number excludes those who have died on the front this year. It also does not include the full scope of deaths among foreign fighters and soldiers who have fought for Russia in militias formed in the occupied Ukrainian territories.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank, estimated in January that as many as 325,000 Russian soldiers and 140,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died in the war as of the end of 2025.

RE: About 352,000 Russian soldiers had died in the war against Ukraine through the end of 2025,

These numbers are EVERYWHERE. I heard Trump mention over a million deaths. Does that mean Ukraine lost over 650,000?

But that’s not what I heard. The number being floated about is over a MILLION Russian deaths.

Which numbers do we believe?

“ Which numbers do we believe?”

I’ve learned that it’s wise to believe no belligerent from any side in a war. Propaganda and general BS overflow.

Wow. We lost (I think) around 58,000 in Vietnam. Over eight years.

An “estimate”?

The 60s phrase “old men plan and send young men to war” could apply but 73 doesn’t sound s old to me now (Trump and I turn 80 soon).

Odd note about Putin’s walk.

“Vladimir Putin’s distinctive walking style, characterized by a reduced swing in his right arm while his left arm moves normally, is likely a “gunslinger’s gait” developed during KGB training. According to a 2015 British Medical Journal study, agents were taught to keep their right hand near their chest to draw a weapon quickly while walking.”

The terminology is weak. You don’t “find” an “estimate”. If it is estimated that Russia lost 350,000 soldiers, that is not a finding. If you count the socks in your sock drawer, you can find out exactly how many socks you have. If you don’t feel like counting your socks, you can take a look in your sock drawer and come up with an estimate of how many socks you have. You would never be able to find the estimate.

Many commentators conflate "casualties" with "deaths." Further, many also conflate "military deaths" with "total deaths" (the latter also including "civilian deaths").

If you've been even only casually following these reports, you should know the difference by now!

Russian attitude for the last thousand years:

“Half a million here, a million there, did we achieve our militray aims”?

Russia has NEVER been too concerned with her fallen soldiers or that they are in harms way.

The Red Army itself killed hundreds of thousands of its own men in WWII.

Civilians?? Who gives a flying Дерьмо?

The Russkies never valued human life and still do not care, so many fallen soldiers for the great Motherland will continue to die and Tsar Nicholas II, Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Malenkov, Khrushchev, Brezhnev, Andropov, Chernenko, Yeltsin, (skip Gorbachev) and Putin do not care about the Russian peoples.

That is a ridiculous number of KIA for the small land area that the Russians have taken from Ukraine.

Correct. Many more were injured to varying degrees, but survived.

But just consider how very much Putin's "Special Military Operation" has endeared him to the international community, bolstered his standing as a humanitarian, stimulated the Russian economy, and strengthened the reputation of Russian military technology!

That means wounded, maimed, and amputees probably are 10 times that number

Such a stupid pointless war. I’m surprised it has lasted this long. A great way for corrupt European politicians to get rich. I wonder how much kick backs have made its way to our own Congress critters?

In WWI, 1m UK deaths where the line moved less than in Ukraine. The lines are static because both sides are more or less equally matched, not because of lack of effort.
