A Florida doctor has been indicted in connection with the death of a 70-year-old man who had the wrong organ removed during surgery.

Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky, 44, was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of second-degree manslaughter in the August 2024 death of the man of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the Office of the State Attorney for the First Judicial Circuit said.

He was taken into custody in Miramar Beach, Florida, on Monday morning and transported to the Walton County Jail ahead of his court appearance Tuesday.

So this surgeon mistook a man's liver for his spleen, even though a liver looks nothing like a spleen and is more than 10x larger. That's a mistake most high school kids wouldn't make after dissecting a couple of pickled animals in their freshman biology class.

My question is how this quack got his medical degree - perhaps he attended one of the Caribbean diploma mills. I also wonder how the nurses and techs didn't intervene, e.g. "Hey doc, I think you're cutting the wrong organ"...

Are the mentally retarded eligible for the death penalty, even if they have an MD degree?

The level of ignorance or outright stupidity necessary to not know the liver from the spleen after (allegedly) graduating from a Pre-Med program + Medical School is amazing.

My guess is the doctor has a drug problem and was high as a kite. If so, then the lawsuit needs to include everyone who was involved. Anyone that impaired should be obvious to the nurses and staff.

Its why people write on themselves in permanent marker before surgeries, which side, which thing is being operated on.

Still, youre assuming they will read what you wrote, a potentially fatal assumption...

Maybe the doc had a friend or relative who needed a liver?

His defense will be that he thought it was the left spleen.

It’s possible that he did it on purpose. Suppose Leftist doctor look up patients and find out they are MAGA. I would not put it past them. How could anyone be so stupid to confuse a liver with the spleen?

Hospitals started actually writing on the woman’s body to show which breast was to be removed after mistakes and lawsuits.

My late wife’s former specialist actually removed the wrong breast from someone and my wife had to get another doctor after he went to prison. His earlier surgery on my wife was done fine, thank God. Turned out it wasn’t his first mistake, just the first one of that kind.

From the National Institutes of Health:
“The practice of doctors marking a woman’s breast to be removed with a written notation (such as initials or “yes”) became a formal, standard, and mandatory protocol in the early to mid-2000s.This practice was primarily implemented as a key component of the “Universal Protocol” and the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist to prevent “never events,” such as wrong-side surgeries, following a rise in reported patient safety incidents in the early 2000s.”

That is why responsible hospitals require the procedure to be written on the patient’s body before surgery.
