STILLWATER, Okla. -Multiple schools in Oklahoma are affected by a cybersecurity breach that threatens to release data of teachers and students across the state. The online learning system Canvas is down for schools and universities nationwide.

The University of Oklahoma sent out an automated email to students addressing the ongoing Canvas incident.

In part, the statement reads:

“The University of Oklahoma is aware of a cybersecurity incident involving Canvas, operated by Instructure. This is a global issue affecting institutions worldwide, and Canvas services are currently experiencing disruptions. The University is actively working with Instructure to monitor the situation and gather additional information.

From Berkeley to Harvard, students at thousands of schools abruptly lost access to their coursework on Thursday, after a key software provider pulled the plug to deal with a cybersecurity incident.

The Canvas LMS software is used by students to submit assignments, communicate with instructors and take exams, and its adoption has spread since the Covid-19 pandemic expanded remote instruction.

The company behind Canvas, Instructure Inc., has been dealing with a security incident for several days. On Wednesday, it had told customers that the situation had been resolved, only for a ransom note to briefly appear on the platform Thursday afternoon.

-----

Pick a university and search their name along with the words "Canvas outage" and you'll likely find they are suffering from the outage. This is right at exam time at most schools and is going to cause major headaches from administrators, professors, and students alike.

Yep. It’s academia. The smart people.

If you’ve worked in a university environment you know that if the network or a major computer program such as Canvas goes down, everyone may as well go home.

I’m glad I’m retired because I was on the essential “Crisis Team”. That meant if everyone was going home except for “essential” staff, I wasn’t going anywhere until the problem was resolved or a work-a-round had been put in place.

Who does these cyber things? What is the purpose. I mean is it done by a malicious foreign entity or just a ‘in the USA’ computer hacker for some prank? I don’t really get it and there are so many of these.

Do they ever find out who?

Some do it to obtain personal information, some for revenge for assorted reasons, some to extort funds, and some just for the fun of it.

It’s the modern day bomb threat to get out of school. Cyberattack the platform.

is it done by a malicious foreign entity

That might not be a bad thing because the software development and maintenance was likely outsourced to a malicious foreign nations already

There will be chaos at public schools trying to open in-person tomorrow.

Schools can't go virtual because the core software for virtual learning is inaccessible.

I’m still a professor at a major university.

College Administrators have always been pretty mediocre, but this new generation of them is downright incompetent.

One mind-blowingly stupid decision after another, yet they still consider themselves the smartest people in the room, despite failure and failure after failure.

Hoping I can hang on a few more years until retirement, but they are destroying so much value every single day that I am not optimistic.

Speaking of canvas and edge uh muh cation:
Now, since the sea's great surges sweep me on, all canvas spread, hear me!
In all creation nothing endures, all is an endless flux.
Each wandering shape a pilgrim passing by, and time itself, glides on in ceaseless flow.
A rolling stream, and streams can never stay, nor lightfoot hours,
as wave is driven by wave, and each pursued, pursues the wave ahead.
So time flies on and follows. Flies and follows always, forever new.
What was before is left behind. What never was is now...

Most high paid college administrators have to have a lowly paid assistant to do the job they should to be doing.

Good luck in lasting until retirement!

“Education platform pays off hacker who shut down site during finals week”

https://www.thecollegefix.com/education-platform-pays-off-hacker-who-shut-down-site-during-finals-week/

“The company that runs Canvas, an online platform used by thousands of colleges and universities, agreed to pay a ransom to hackers who shut down the website last week, leading to some schools to postpone finals.

Instructure, which operates Canvas, did not disclose the amount that it paid to hacker ShinyHunters in exchange for the return of “compromised data of some 275 million users across more than 8,800 institutions,” Inside Higher Ed reports.

“While there is never complete certainty when dealing with cyber criminals, we believe it was important to take every step within our control to give customers additional peace of mind, to the extent possible,” the company stated.

Instructure also stated that it “received digital confirmation of data destruction (shred logs)” and assurance “that no Instructure customers will be extorted as a result of this incident, publicly or otherwise.””
