Even though it would be built more than 70 miles away, people in Salt Lake County say the impact could reach far beyond that area.
A proposed data center development in Box Elder County would span roughly 40,000 acres.
“With the size that it’s going to be, taking up all that land, I just don’t think that that’s a wise investment,” said Meg, a Salt Lake County resident.
For many people, the scale of this project stands out. It translates to about 62 square miles — comparable to several Utah cities.
St. George covers about 64 square miles, nearly the same size as 40,000 acres.
Other cities used for comparison include Layton at 63 square miles and Lehi at 48 square miles, meaning 40,000 acres is slightly larger, and Orem at 19 square miles, meaning the project would be roughly three times larger.
It also translates to roughly 30,000 football fields. For some, the size alone raises concerns about resources.
“My understanding is that these data centers are going to take in a ton of water, and if that’s the case, that is not going to help us here at all,” said Meg.
Meg believes the impact wouldn’t stop at Box Elder County.
“Oh, it affects everybody. It wouldn’t matter if you had it in the middle of nowhere — it’s all connected.”
She added that the issue is a shared responsibility.

This sounds like a bug.
Box Elder CO. is 6,729 sq/miles in size, including 934 sq/miles of water.
The population density is 10.04 per sq/mile.
But I get your point - what the hell kinda computer is it that will take up 62 sq/m?
